Jacobus Gallus was a contemporary of Giuseppe Arcimboldo at the court of one of the most fascinating Renaissance monarchs: Emperor Rudolf II’s Prague. Marc Desmet demonstrates in his article some of their similar characteristics (the musician and the painter) and similarities also found in the Prague court: a taste for the strange, the extravagant, the unusual and even grotesque, the mannerist caprice and the experimentation with freedom. The painting that illustrates the front cover, painted by Arcimboldo in 1563, is Spring, one of a series on the seasons of the year (two others are in Vienna). It is housed in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. It was originally a gift made to Philip II by his uncle the emperor Ferdinand I. |
