A long succession of innovative and highly successful recordings with his Gabrieli Consort and Players have won for Paul McCreesh a world-wide reputation as one of today’s leading early music directors.

Increasingly in demand as a guest conductor both in the opera house and the concert hall, McCreesh now divides his time between his Gabrieli forces and mainstream orchestras.

He managed to find time to talk to Brian Robins during an intensely active period during which he had just made his debut with the Royal Danish Opera in performances of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, was about to conduct Handel’s great oratorio Saul at a BBC Promenade Concert and then leave for France, where the Gabrielis were scheduled to give four concerts that included Bach’s St. John Passion, Magnificat and Easter Oratorio.
