The flag of the Kalmar Union was derived from the Dannebrog, bearing a Christian cross. This is merely a recreation of what the flag is thought to have looked like. It is based on textual evidence, as there are no surviving flags or pictures showing its appearance.

To most people the flag no longer symbolizes the Nordic region as a whole (the Nordic Council uses a stylized swan as its emblem). Nonetheless, a number of modern Nordic unity activists use the flag, or try to spread awareness of its existence.[citation needed]

From the mid-1990’s till its refashioning in 2007, an identical design was flown as the Flag of Orkney.

It should be noted that this flag is very similar to that of the Swedish Church.
