Early versions from Korean Empire (Joseon Dynasty)
Upper is the 1882 depiction of the flag in the US Navy book, Flags of Maritime Nations. Lower is the flag given by King Gojong to his diplomatic advisor O.N. Denny in 1890.
|
These historical variants show somewhat different taegeuk depictions; also, the 1882 U.S. Navy depiction is left-right reversed with respect to the Denny flag. The arrangement of the trigrams was not officially fixed until an ordinance of 1948, when the South Korean government was established. |
