Image:Kroaz_Du.svg '''The Kroaz Du''' (Black Cross) is an historical flag used in Brittany The origin of the ''Kroaz Du'' remains controversial. One theory is the banners with crosses were first used by Crusaders from about 1188. However, very few Breton barons joined the Crusade, so it is more probable that the earliest ''Kroaz Du'' was given to Peter_I,_Duke_of_Brittany by Pope_Gregory_IX in 1236 or 1237. Image:Banner_of_the_Breton_French.svg A similar banner was used by Breton and French Knights at famous Battle of Breton_civil_war known as The Combat_of_the_Thirty in the year 1351. The ''Kroaz Du'' later saw use by Breton sailors and soldiers, and was probably the national flag of the independent state of Brittany until 1532. Now this flag is used espacially by wing-right nationalists (Adsav) and come in concurrence with the other Breton flag, called Gwenn_ha_du. This one is used by moderated nationalists and now by the public administration. ==Trivia== Image:Flag_of_Cornwall.svg The Breton flag is an exact Negative of the flag of Cornwall, sometimes known as Saint_Piran's_Flag. The connections between Cornwall and Brittany are well recorded but the historical links between the two flags (if any) is unknown. ==External links== *''BannieloĆ¹ Breizh'', the vexillological and heraldic Society of Brittany (in English) http://banniel.geobreizh.com/www/banniel/en-drapeaux-gwennhadu.asp *http://www.nationalflaggen.de/flags-of-the-world/flags/fr-bz-du.html ==References== Les drapeaux bretons de 1188 Ć  nos jours (English: The Breton flags, from 1188 until now) by Philippe Rault, published by Coop Breizh (in French), (1998) ISBN 2-84346-034-4 {{flag-stub}}
