April 10, 2006: The gay and lesbian community of the Northern Cape has described as discriminatory, conditions set out for sexually active homosexuals by the South African national Blood Services (SANBS). This follows a plea by the provincial government for donors to come forward ahead of the Easter weekend.
Jerry January, the provincial co-ordinator of the national coalition for lesbian and gay equality in the province, says they feel discriminated against. He says this was after their members in Kimberley were prevented from donating blood recently.
"The lesbian and gay community here in the Northern Cape find it very surprising that people, being in the medical field and medical practitioners, are the population of the community that really know that people who are gay and lesbian are not the only people who carry the HIV/Aids virus, it is a heterosexual disease as well, so we are very surprised at them being so uneducated," said January.
