Mike Amidzich opened Pizza Man on Nov. 15, 1969. Ten days ago, he lost his business in a six-alarm fire. His wife, Deanna, says that although she and her husband are devastated by the fire, they plan to reopen soon.
"The new business will absolutely be on the East Side," says Amidzich. "We have no idea where. We have had no time to explore our options, but we know it will be somewhere on the East Side."
Amidzich says workers were able to salvage a portion of Pizza Man's bar, a few booths, a decorative archway and a lot of bricks.
"We're going to incorporate these items in the new locale," she says.
Amidzich says she was disgusted and saddened by today's confirmation that the fire was caused by arson.
"The fact that somebody could think about it, and then actually do it, is saddening," she says.
Pizza Man employed 40 people and approximately another 12 people lived in the 10 units above the restaurant that were consumed in the fire.
"It has been unbelievable, but the help and support we're receiving is incredible," says Amidzich.

just a passing thought...I too am surprised by the overwhelming media of constantly only bringing up pizza man as a victim here...sadly I wonder if for those in the suburbs, pizza man is one of the few references they have for the possibly "scary" eastside, so the media pounces on a landmark that they think most will know?? Not saying its right but...

I am so so so tired of the media primarily referencing Pizza Man and it's employees as basically being the only victims of this awful fire. Like it was already stated, the residents who lost all their belongings and the employees from the other businesses are only listed as an afterthought. Is this racial or does Pizza Man have affiliations with Clear Channel or other major media outlets? I rally would like to know how the employees of Pizza Man and the owners are any more important than the residents and the other business owners and employees. It sickens me that citizens see themzelves as so great for donating to the funds being raised and have not questioned who is helping out these other people. It is just sad.

4277, I did not catch the interview with the owner of Cush, mainly because I get my news from print or the Internet. I would have been interested to hear what he had to say. As far as your comment is concerned about the Grecian Delight owner possibly not liking to do interview requests, yes, it's a possibility. But here's why I don't think that's the reason. Typically, if a person refuses to give quotes for a piece, a news organization will say something like, "The owner of Grecian Delight declined to be interviewed for this story." It at least lets the public know that an effort was made to get all sides to a piece. The other reason why I don't think it was a case of a shy owner is because all the stories have been "Pizza Man this, Pizza Man that." And as an after thought, the stories say something like, "Along with Pizza Man, the building was also home to three other businesses and upstairs tenants."

I can't understand why the landlords would prefer empty storefronts over lowering their rent.

ZBoy, you're wrong....I definitely saw on of the Jenkins brothers (owners of CUSH) interviewed on CH. 4 in the day or two after the fire. And how do you know that Andy from Grecian Delight didn't turn down an interview request? Not everyone is as comfortable in front of the camera as others....especially in the aftermath of losing their life's work and livelihood.
