Again, the National Board of Review is not always a forecaster of things to come, but rather a bellwether of where the momentum is at this moment in time. (It tends to be a bit New York-centric.) Paul Thomas Anderson Announces Next Film, Starts His Own Religion

Rejoice! It's time for Paul Thomas Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman to work together again. After Sydney, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love, Variety reports that the two are teaming up for a new feature about a man who creates his own religion. But don't celebrate too much -- this news is still in the early stages. Anderson is said to be planning to submit a finished script to Universal, who will then decide whether or not they will greenlight it (um, yes please). And, the trade couldn't get comment from the studio, or either man's reps.
But here's what we do know. Should this go into production, there will be a $35 million price tag with Hoffman finally getting center stage playing "the Master" (as in master of ceremonies), a charismatic man who starts "a faith-based organization" in the 1950s. As predicted, now that Vivendi has agreed to sell its 20% stake in NBC Universal for $5.8 billion, the deal for cable corp. Comcast to acquire NBC Universal from Ge has gone through. Comcast would be the sixth owner of Universal over the past two decades. (The Obama administration could take a year to review the deal before the two companies can merge.) Comcast will pay $13.75 billion for a majority stake in a combined entertainment entity to be run by Nbcu chief Jeff Zucker. Los Angeles - Superstar Beyonce and country newcomer Taylor Swift dominated the Grammy nominations announced Wednesday night. Beyonce, 28, nabbed 10 nominations including album of the year for I Am Sasha Fierce, song of the year for Single Ladies and record of the year for Halo. Swift, just 19, received eight nominations. She was nominated in the album, song and record of the year. The first folks to see Avatar will be, naturally, the Hollywood Foreign Press. They see the much-anticipated James Cameron 3-D epic on December 8th. (I see it on the 10th.) The Hfpa are also ubiquitous on the Oscar party circuit. To say they are being wined and dined is an understatement. There will be something conspicuously missing when Friends costar Lisa Kudrow guests on Courteney Cox’s ABC sitcom, Cougar Town, on Jan. 6: friendship. "They didn't want to play friends,” says executive producer Bill Lawrence, who quickly came up with a different role for Kudrow. "She plays a dermatologist who is a horrible, horrible person, but goes to her because she's the best. The of them playing people who dislike each other intensely was very funny for me to watch." Katzenberg: Dwa Will Have Its Biggest Year

DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg predicted Wednesday that next year will be the "biggest in the company's history." In a conference call with analysts and investors, Katzenberg observed that the company plans to release three features next year, each of them in 3-D, which will allow premium ticket pricing. Katzenberg predicted that 3D will boost net revenue by $30-40 million per film and might well be more, depending on the number of additional 3D screens are in operation when the films are released. He implied that lenders are likely to be more open to providing financing to theater owners upgrading to digital 3D projection. Investors seemed impressed, sending the stock soaring to its high for the year, $38.99 before closing at $37.96. It was trading at $38.45 at midday today (Thursday). Meanwhile, the company seemed set on employing big names as vocal talent for its films -- if only for their marketing value. The Sundance Film Festival unveiled its list of films competing for its prestigious awards Wednesday, and the names of stars appearing in the drama category seemed as impressive as those in any Oscar contest. Among them were Kristen Stewart, James Gandolfini, Orlando Bloom, Laura Linny, Edie Falco, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Mary-Louise Parker, America Fererra, and Michelle Williams. The World Cinema competition will feature films from 14 countries (including one, Undertow, which is a joint Colombia-France-Germany-Peru production). James Cameron's Avatar will be screened at the Dubai Film Festival on December 16, two days before it is officially scheduled to premiere in the U.S. and elsewhere, festival organizers indicated on Wednesday. The festival is due to open on December 9 with a screening of the Rob Marshall musical Nine, which features a cast that includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and Marion Cotillard. Most, if not all, of the actors are expected to attend the festival, which is being held at a time when the United Emirate nation is facing the worst financial crisis in its history. »

Demonstrating that direct-to-dvd releases can enjoy considerable success in their own right, given the proper kind of marketing, Disney's Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws debuted in fourth place on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart last week. With many top retailers discounting DVD titles by half -- or more -- home video releases flew off the shelves, with many of them likely to end up under the Christmas tree in gift wrapping later this month. Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight, released over a year ago but priced below $10 in many retail outlets, returned to the chart in second place. So, too, did Paramount's Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which was released on DVD last February and which could also be found in stores deeply discounted to $10 or less. Home Media magazine estimated that about 25 million DVDs were sold over the Thanksgiving week. »

ABC’s banishment of Adam Lambert continues to be other networks’ gains. His upcoming appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” has been canceled and now he will perform on NBC’s “Jay Leno” instead.
