The Retail Action Strategy, launched by Mayor Adrian Fenty and Office of Planning Director Harriet Tregoning in April 2007, is the first ever citywide assessment of the District’s retail potential. It examines ways to strengthen the city’s retail base at both the citywide and local scale, to promote vibrant commercial districts with a broad range of retail businesses in all neighborhoods, and to create expanded opportunities for small and local retailers. The strategy will build upon and support other public efforts, such as neighborhood and revitalization plans and the DC Great Streets Initiative, as well as help guide private investment.
