Austrian Airlines

Noise

The company collaborates closely with aircraft and engine manufacturers to prevent noise pollution wherever possible. The companies in question have made huge improvements in aircraft design in recent decades. Although flying has already become a much quieter experience, Austrian is striving to reduce noise pollution further still.
At Austrian, we work together with Vienna Airport and Austro Control to reduce levels of noise produced by operational procedures. Much of the noise avoidance work is done within the framework of the Vienna Airport Dialogue Forum. This communications platform was founded in 2005 by the participants in the mediation process surrounding construction of the third runway. The regions of Lower Austria, Vienna and Burgenland take part in the Dialogue Forum, alongside local residents’ associations and citizens’ initiatives, Vienna Airport and the Austrian Airlines Group. Participants in the Dialogue Forum work together to design aircraft flight routes producing the lowest levels of noise that are both economical and environmentally-friendly.  www.dialogforum.at

A group within the Dialogue Forum publishes what it refers to as an Evaluation Report annually to examine and readjust the objective decided upon. One result of the report in 2007 was that as many people were living in the noise zone over 50 dB as in previous years.

FANOMOS – Flight Track and Noise Monitoring System

The FANOMOS system serves to measure flight noise emissions in and around Vienna Airport. The system makes it possible to precisely record and analyse current aviation events and the situation regarding noise, irrespective of individual sentiments.

Supervision of flight routes by Austro Control

Austro Control controls all flight routes in Austria and monitors their observance. It registers any deviations, and can trace these back to the pilot responsible. In this way, observance of the established, low-noise flight routes can be guaranteed.
