Antidiscrimination Laws for Logan, Utah

The city council of Logan, Utah, passed two ordinances Tuesday night that protect LGBT people from discrimination in housing and employment within city limits.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune,“Modeled after anti-discrimination laws recently adopted in Salt Lake City, Logan's housing and employment ordinances passed with four votes and one abstention, by Councilman Dean Quayle. A crowd, which filled the City Council Chambers halls and an overflow room, was mostly subdued throughout a one-hour public hearing. Following the tally though, the crowd erupted in applause and rewarded the council with a standing ovation.”

When some members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints challenged the Logan ordinances, city council chairman Jay Monson clarified the matter with LDS headquarters in Salt Lake City and confirmed the church’s support for nondiscrimination laws, the Tribune reported.

While Some members of the LDS church did object. The main group of people who were objecting were a part of another group called "America Forever" which is reminiscent of the WBC. They sent out 80,000 Faxes when the Salt Lake City Non-discrimination ordinance first was being discussed. They claim gays have "anti-species" syndrome. I never know whether to laugh or cry when I read things like that. I'm glad to see Logan passed this :) I spent a semester at Utah State University and met some awesome individuals up there, many which were involved in the process to make this whole thing happen. Good job L.I.F.E and USU GLBTA services! Logan is an awesome place, especially in utah. It's one of the few places I feel truely comfortable. I can only hope the rest of Utah will follow the example that Logan, Park city, and Salt lake city have set.
