How Firefox Stays Secure:

Philosophy

Our mission is to make the Web better.

Mozilla was founded as a public benefit organization with the goal of making the Web a better place for everyone. With that in mind, we’re always improving Firefox to make sure it includes the latest security technology and ways to safeguard your privacy.

Your security is our top priority.

And we don’t try to tackle the problem alone. An international community of security experts is working around the clock to make your web browsing safer. Our team works right from the start to identify and address potential problems before a single line of code is written. It’s like having your neighborhood watch led by a group of highly trained ninjas.

Community

Open source means you’re never on your own.

The Web is always moving and changing--sometimes unpredictably. Our open-source nature lets a world of security researchers get involved in fixing bugs and building stronger security features. Our community of testers also help us find--and fix--security issues in record time, with tens of thousands of them running new versions every day.

Here’s where you come in:

The first step to staying safe on the web is keeping your version of Firefox up to date (we’ll prompt you when a new version is ready). The next step is keeping your plugins up to date, and we’ve built a handy tool to help with that. Following these easy steps allows you to take advantage of the best security team on the Web.

Features

Firefox gives you the tools to make smart choices.

Firefox has built-in, easy-to-use tools to help you stay safe and make the right decisions in an ever-changing online world. We’ve listed a few of the top security features below (or view the rest here).

Outdated Plugin Detection

Some web pages require that you install small applications called plugins to watch videos, play games or view documents. These plugins are written by other companies, and it can be hard to make sure they’re always up to date. Since outdated plugins are a security risk, Firefox will let you know when you have a plugin that’s vulnerable to attack and direct you to the right site to get the updated version. Visit our plugin check page.

Private Browsing

Sometimes it's nice to go undercover, so turn this feature on and protect your browsing history. You can slip in and out of private browsing mode quickly, so it’s easy to go back to what you were doing before as if nothing ever happened. It’s great if you’re doing your online banking on a shared computer or checking email from an Internet café.

Instant Web Site ID

Want to be extra sure about a site’s legitimacy before you make a purchase? Click on a site favicon for an instant identity overview. Another click digs deeper: how many times have you visited? Are your passwords saved? Check up on suspicious sites, avoid Web forgeries and make sure a site is what it claims to be.
