Dierks Bentley’s new album has a hefty helping of roots and bluegrass

Jun 1, 1:22 AM

When you’re on top of your field, you’ve got two ways to go. You can keep playing it safe, trying not to disrupt a good thing. Or you use your leverage to take some risks, hoping to pull fans along on your adventurous ride.

Brad Meltzer and his ‘Heroes’

May 31, 5:30 PM

Brad Meltzer wants to talk to you about his heroes. And he wants to hear about yours. In his new book, “Heroes for My Son,” the father of three writes vignettes about famous people who inspired him, including the Wright brothers, Mother Teresa, Jackie Robinson, Nelson Mandela, Miep Gies, George H.W. Bush, Eleanor Roosevelt and — not surprising from a true comics enthusiast — Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, the creators of the first superhero, Superman.

John Waters still walking on the wild side with ‘Role Models’

May 31, 5:45 PM

An artist drawn to the margins, John Waters achieved infamy with low-budget 1970s films starring garish, up-for-anything transvestite Divine and other horrifying/lovable Baltimore misfits. Adding heart and movie stars over the years, Waters’ freak-show movies (“Multiple Maniacs,” “Pink Flamingos”) morphed into cockeyed calls for understanding. “Hairspray,” in its 1988 film, Broadway-musical and 2007 movie-musical forms, promoted racial harmony and chubby-teen empowerment.

Broadway rocks on with a new breed of musicals

We’re long past the point where any piece of intellectual property — movie, play, novel, comic book — might be considered unsuitable or unfeasible for the Broadway stage. But the authorship of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” is worth noting: Bono and the Edge of the rock band U2.

Zest: The comforts of home

May 26, 9:40 AM

Meatloaf is comfort food. But what if the version you were weaned on wasn’t particularly memorable? A few weeks ago, I had the chance to put that question to Thomas Keller — considered one of the greatest chefs in the world — as he prepared to sign copies of “Ad Hoc at Home” during a stop at a Leawood gourmet store.
