The story behind the Johnson County Commission’s vote switch
You never turn down a chance at free money with no strings attached, but the boobs on the Johnson County Commission did just that. What’s worse, they did so, by a vote of 5-1, for what look likes purely political reasons at the expense of thousands of teenage girls who are at risk of getting pregnant out of wedlock.

Bank robbery charge filed for man who surrendered
Jun 1, 3:28 PMFederal prosecutors in Kansas today charged a man with robbing a bank in Overland Park on Friday. Larry L. Rice, 60, of Abilene, Kan., turned himself in at the Johnson County jail on Saturday morning in connection with the robbery of the Bank of the West in a grocery store at 8900 W. 135th St.
Three finalists selected for Kansas appeals court

Lenexa man injured in Colorado avalanche
May 31, 5:14 PMA Lenexa man has been injured in a Colorado avalanche. Timothy Jansen, 32, and his brother, Mark Jansen, 27, of Denver, were climbing a peak in the Elk Mountains near Aspen on Sunday when they were swept down by the avalanche, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office reported.
New fire station dedicated Tuesday

SM Park to host the Great American Family Campout June 26
Jun 2, 9:34 AMThe Johnson County Park and Recreation District is holding its version of the national Great American Backyard Campout. Instead of the backyard, the district is inviting campers to come to Shawnee Mission Park. Here it’s being called the Great American Family Campout and starts at 2 p.m. June 26 and runs through 10 a.m. the next day.
Shawnee pub to have fundraiser for family of fallen firefighter
Jun 1, 6:09 PMA pub in Shawnee will hold a fundraiser Friday to raise money for the family of Shawnee firefighter John Glaser, who died while searching a burning house on May 22. Waxy O’Shae’s Irish Pub, 11900 Shawnee Mission Parkway, will have the fundraiser with silent auction. Events will start at 5 p.m. and lasting until the pub closes.

Olathe Library proposes spending cuts for 2011
Jun 2, 4:15 PMLike its larger cousin_ the Johnson County Library system_ the Olathe Library is proposing a major budget reduction for next year. Emily Baker, Olathe’s library director, told the city council Tuesday that hours are being cutback as well as proposed spending levels for next year.

Leawood jogger’s report of attempted abduction was a misunderstanding, police say
May 28, 2:24 PMLeawood police announced Friday that a woman’s report that a man tried to abduct her while she was jogging Monday came from a misunderstanding. The woman said that a man in a 1990s pickup truck with four dogs in it tried to abduct her. Police found the man and questioned him, but have determined that no criminal violation took place, police said.

May 25, 4:19 PMA man in a pickup truck on Monday evening tried to abduct a female jogger in Leawood, police said. The jogger escaped and called police after the man tried to force her into his truck just south of 119th Street and Roe Avenue about 9:30 p.m., police said.

Vet clinic at Pet Connection likely to close, but its animal shelter remains open
May 27, 11:09 PMThe low-cost vet clinic at The Pet Connection in Mission is expected to close today, officials say, despite efforts by donors to keep the clinic open. Problems started earlier this year when the Kansas Board of Veterinarian Examiners filed several disciplinary allegations against Pet Connection veterinarian Andrea Baldauf-Kennedy.
