•General Tso’s Chicken: Yes, this is an Americanized Chinese dish, but it’s still named for someone real. So who was Gen. Tso? Gen. Tso Tsungtang (sometimes Zuo Zongtang) was one of the most successful military commanders in Chinese history. Tso, who was reportedly ruthless, made a name for himself in the 19th century beating back rebels during the Taiping Rebellion, China’s greatest civil war.

For affordable luxury, roast a duck

May 31, 5:49 PM

A broiled Long Island duckling is very near the zenith of culinary elegance and excellence — at once a tour de force and an affordable luxury. But there is a fear factor to overcome to place a beautifully roasted duck on the table on Saturday night. That solid block of ice in the store is intimidating. No plucking is needed, but the duck must thaw in your refrigerator for three days.

Zest: The comforts of home

May 26, 9:40 AM

Meatloaf is comfort food. But what if the version you were weaned on wasn’t particularly memorable? A few weeks ago, I had the chance to put that question to Thomas Keller — considered one of the greatest chefs in the world — as he prepared to sign copies of “Ad Hoc at Home” during a stop at a Leawood gourmet store.

The search for KC's best breakfast joints

To Michael Kizzee, this was the most important thing about enjoying the most important meal of the day: It's a cool way to have a date with your wife.

These KC restaurants offer an authentic taste of Mexico

Everyone knows Kansas City is a great town for hearty, sit-down Tex-Mex fare. But if you’re short on time or don’t feel like a heavy meal under a blanket of bubbling cheese, a lot of snack shops, drive-throughs and quick-service destinations offer up a different, and often much more authentic, taste of Mexico.

Chefs know where the good values are for eating on the cheap

There are no white tablecloths in Swagger. There are no sautéed veal sweetbread appetizers or thyme roasted diver scallop entrees. The most exotic menu item is the Suribachi burger — tempura Angus beef with wasabi coleslaw ($9.95).

Barbecue fans aren't reluctant to voice opinions

There’s an old saying that in polite social circles one should never discuss religion, politics or sex.

The search for KC's top (hot) dog

Chicago is the capital of the Wiener Republic, and you really can’t get a bad dog in the city. But where in Kansas City can you find a hot dog that's worthy of the Windy City?
