Federer stunned by Soderling at French Open
His French Open reign suddenly over, his record streak of 23 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals done, too, Roger Federer paused briefly as he trudged off court at dusk, acknowledging the fans’ applause with a polite smile and a quick wave.

Henin loses at French Open
May 31, 11:54 PMPARIS | According to the seeding this wasn’t an upset. But just try telling that to anyone who saw Justine Henin lose for the first time at Roland Garros since 2004. Seventh-seed Samantha Stosur even sensed that her victory against Henin, seeded 22nd, was something special. Nerves got to Stosur and she double-faulted before putting Henin away 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Venus Williams loses in French Open’s 4th round
May 30, 11:44 PMPARIS | So much for the thought that this might be the year Venus Williams would make a strong showing at the French Open. So much for the thought that she and her younger sister Serena, the tournament’s two top-seeded women, would deliver another all-Williams Grand Slam final.

Ginepri is last hope for U.S. at French Open
May 29, 9:59 PMSaturday got off to a particularly inauspicious start for Americans in Paris. Playing simultaneously across the Roland Garros grounds in the morning, Andy Roddick lost in straight sets; the top-seeded Bryan twins, Bob and Mike, did the same in doubles; and Serena Williams felt so dizzy and weak while dropping five consecutive games that she sought a doctor’s attention before eventually turning things around to win.

Henin, Sharapova set up rematch in French Open
May 29, 12:04 AMPARIS | So much has transpired in the nearly 2 1/2 years since Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin last played each other. Sharapova needed right shoulder surgery and was off the tour for 10 months, then missed time because of a right elbow injury. Henin abruptly announced her retirement and stayed away for 20 months, then returned, happier off the court and, so far, almost as good on it.

Roddick slogs out victory in rainy French Open
May 27, 11:24 PMThe remaking of Andy Roddick is paying dividends at the French Open. He’s no longer quite so dependent on that fastest-on-tour serve and booming forehand. No longer in trouble when Plan A doesn’t work on a given day. And no longer a pushover on the red clay.

Federer, Kuzetsova labor at French Open
May 26, 11:27 PMApparently, even Roger Federer, with his record 16 Grand Slam titles, can use some advice now and then. Wednesday, a wet and windy day at the French Open, was one of those times. Forced off court by two rain delays, and “pushed,” as he put it, by Alejandro Falla, a player with a career record below .500, Federer turned to Swiss Davis Cup captain Severin Luthi for words of wisdom during the breaks. Told to be more aggressive early, then to use more drop shots late, Federer wound up with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-4 second-round victory.

Roddick wins first match at French Open in five sets
May 25, 11:20 PMPARIS | Andy Roddick’s preparation for this French Open was hardly traditional. Or ideal, from a purely tennis perspective, anyway. He skipped a clay-court event in Rome so he could celebrate his one-year wedding anniversary with his wife, Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model Brooklyn Decker. He missed another tune-up tournament in Madrid because of a stomach virus.

Federer cruises in opening match at French Open
May 24, 11:38 PMPARIS | The French-speaking voice booming through loudspeakers at Court Philippe Chatrier recited Roger Federer’s credits during prematch introductions, detailing his six titles at Wimbledon, five at the U.S. Open, four at the Australian Open and then, reaching a crescendo, concluded this way: “One at Roland Garros, here, last year!”

Venus Williams opens French Open with straight-set win
May 23, 10:51 PMWhistles and whispers circulated through the stands at Court Suzanne Lenglen on Sunday, a reaction brought about not by Venus Williams’ play at the French Open, but rather by her outfit. With a lacy, black overlay giving it the illusion of being see-through, and bright red trim on the bodice, Williams’ corset-like get-up made her look as if she were ready to perform in a 19th century Parisian cancan chorus line. Her game, a mix of power and niftier-than-usual footwork on this day, was very 21st century, and befitting a star of the show.

Federer has vivid memories of last year and hopes to win again at French Open
May 22, 7:54 PMPARIS | Nearly a year later, with a bottle of sparkling water in front of him and the full weight of Roland Garros no longer on his back, Roger Federer was in the same hotel in central Paris, the memories of his first French Open victory now “a slide show” in his head. “I see pictures going by,” he said. “The picture of me on the knees, disbelief that I won the French right after the serve, the first moment when I kind of dropped the racket right next to me. Everything is so different from the winning pictures at other tournaments on hardcourts or grass. The orange of the clay is very vibrant, very vivid.”

Wimbledon will have its first official poet
May 18, 11:07 PMIf Roger Federer’s performances at Wimbledon weren’t already the stuff of poetry, they certainly will be this year. The country that gave the world Shakespeare and Wordsworth will have a “Championships Poet” at Wimbledon to write a poem a day about the Grand Slam tournament.

Bryan brothers returning to the Explorers
May 10, 11:09 PMBetween winning tournaments as today’s top professional tennis doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan have been busy this year. So busy in fact that when the Kansas City Explorers wrapped up their World TeamTennis draft and revealed their roster earlier this spring, the names of the Bryan brothers, who had played with the team for five previous seasons, were noticeably absent.
