The New 60: I Am Who I Am

Advocate columnist Robert Levithan says he remembers being OK with civil unions because he was used to accepting less. Now, he says, with the help of his nephew, he insists on equal rights.

ROBERT LEVITHAN MAIN X390 (KAREN FUCHS) | ADVOCATE.COM

I am a privileged man:  I have not suffered for being completely out about my sexuality or my HIV status. Sometimes I forget how rare that makes me.

Something is missing from the picture: my full civil rights. I was not initially a big proponent of gay marriage. I was content with the idea of civil union status. My generation had been brainwashed that we were less than, so I was willing to accept less in order to keep the peace. My heart changed when my nephew, David Levithan, the Lambda award-winning author of Boy Meets Boy, wrote that he wouldn’t accept civil unions or a lesser status than marriage because he would not accept it if they said Jews could only have civil unions.

Right: I do not accept second-tier status for people of color, or women, so why would I accept it for myself. I want every right that comes with being an American citizen.

A dear friend read my last column online in Malawi, where she is working on a microeconomics project for local women, the very day I read that Malawi had arrested and convicted a gay male couple for “gross indecency” for celebrating their engagement. I asked my friend if she was aware of this. Her prompt reply: “It’s despicable.” Of course, any friend of mine would condemn discrimination against homosexuals. And I am relieved that after the international outcry, the president of Malawi pardoned the young men. And yet my heart is not easy. This is outrageous.

Where does my outrage live?

I am amazed that I can sleep at night. And I do. Compartmentalization may be necessary to function in this world.  However, we must stay awake, we must take action, we must recognize that silence equals complicity.

As an "over 50" I'd hoped the new "60" columnist would strike a chord. Still early, but OK, maybe he's just not for me.

Pro-marriage droning to a 100% pro-marriage audience can become a way of "prioritizing" all other gay issues into oblivion.

@Greg WTF are you so angry about? You talk about how sick you are of the gay media talking "all gay marriage, all the time"? You specifically point out the Advocate as one of the blaring "all marriage" bullhorns, yet, here you are. You saw the synopsis of Mr. Levithan's column that introduced it as a "marriage" article, yet, here you are. Clearly, you are looking for something. While I admire your passion for the passage of ENDA, I can't help but question how you would undermine the movement toward marriage rights. I would argue that one need not prioritize the civil rights they wish to achieve. I certainly enjoy a lively discourse, but the anger you communicate might be better expended on a website that proposes to DENY us of our rights - not one that supports us.

No, Greg, and I'm willing to bet you know that's not what I'm saying at all. The point is that Pelosi wouldn't be talking about an ENDA vote if we hadnt talked about--and continue to talk about--marriage.

Jerry: You're willing to wait 20, 30 years for ENDA until we get marriage in Podunk - gee, Pelosi was talking about having an ENDA vote THIS year! Or don't you read what little non-marriage news the Advocate runs?

Let me break it down so it's real simple. When (and it's not if, it's when) marriage is a universal reality in this country, there won't be any question about ENDA--it will be pulled along in the wake of the discussion. You won't hear "hey--we can't deny the fags the right to marry, but we sure as hell can discriminate against them when it comes to employment". However, if the focus was ENDA solely, we'd fight that battle. And maybe succeed. And then fight the battle for separate but equal CUs and DPs maybe. And fight other separate battles with respect to every single bit of discrimination that folks throw at us. Everything would be a new struggle--chipping away at the structure of discrimination, but with every step a monumental and only incremental effort. Of course most readers here are in favor of gay marriage--I didn't think anyone was trying to sell that particular perspective. And it is, more than incidentally, what Robert's posting is about.

It's just BORING to read about marriage all the fucking time! No gay person reading this site is anti-marriage (no one ever says so, anyway, that I've seen), so save the boring lectures for somebody who actually, you know, disagrees with you.

1of18000 in London is right. How can we tell private employers not to discriminate against sexual minorities if we as a nation still discriminate? Institutional discrimination, of which same-sex marriage bans are a part, must end before any laws requiring private individuals and corporations can be enforced effectively. And whether you're white, black, hispanic, asian, indian, young, old, rich, poor or middle class, civil rights are civil rights. Not wanting to be equal because you're poor?? WTF? How is seeking full equal treatment under the law a rich white man's luxury?? Running for elected office may be a rich person's luxury, but advocating for your own civil rights is both smart and possible for all economic stratas.

Enchilada? More like, marriage is a nice hobby for rich gay people who just don't give a shit about ENDA.
