Michaels Blindsided by "Divorce" Papers

ETHERIDGE MICHAELS X390

Melissa Etheridge filed paperwork Friday in a Los Angeles court to officially dissolve her domestic partnership with Tammy Lynn Michaels, according to TMZ.

The couple announced their separation in April. The couple held a commitment ceremony in 2003 and registered a domestic partnership in August 2005.

In 2006, Michaels gave birth to twins from an anonymous sperm donor.

According to court documents, Etheridge cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. She is seeking joint custody of their 3-year-old children.

Michaels took to her blog Saturday morning, writing in a poem that she felt "blindsided" by Etheridge.

"SMACK!!!!!!!!!!!!
FILE FOR DIVORCE!!!!!!
even though we both promised
agreed
handshook
pinkyswore

no filing until after tour
in the fall"

I legally married the man I have been with for over 18 years in California!! I always believed the civil unions were a total farce. This story just proves that this is very true.

Interesting that apparently neither of them proposed marriage during the several months in 2008 when marriage was legal in California. Or maybe that WAS brought up, and rejected? Either way, this was probably not a total surprise.

I think "incredibly immature" says it all---on both sides. And as for the fact that "it's none of our business", I would contend it is because Ms Melissa and various advocacy groups have made it so. No one in the family values crowd points to Elizabeth Taylor as an example of matrimonial bliss and wholesomeness and neither should we with our Lesbian Liz Taylor. If nothing else, she should be the new poster child for the covenant marriage movement.

There are two sides to every story. I, personally, don't know the makings or breakings of their relationship and suspect that none of you do either as it's NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. I do, however, know that Tammy is much younger than Melissa and from the beginning knew that it would eventually play a part in perhaps a break up. They've been together for many years, folks, it's not like Melissa just up and left after a year or so .. clearly she tried to make it work. I find all the poems and blogging about their relationship, or end of their relationship rather on Tammy's part to be incredibly immature. I wish happiness to them both in the future.

Perhaps Ms Michales should remember this little aphorism for future reference: "A verbal contract is only worth the paper it's written on." As for a handshake or "pinkyswear" (and, grife, could we be any more 3rd grade?), without something written on paper, it's legal value is no more binding.

Well said, Carrie. I've been a Melissa fan for years. This entire incident has majorly diminished her, in my eyes. Just because a person is a good artist, musician, writer, etc. does not make them a good person behind the scenes.

happycat, if you remember correctly, Melissa Etheridge was blindsided by Julie Cypher. Melissa did not end THAT relationship. Julie suddenly announced that she was no longer gay. I, too, feel for Tammy and my strong respect for Melissa is dropping a little, but this is not the second time she has done this. I will admit, I am Team Tammy on this one.

I feel sorry for Tammy Lynn for getting involved with a serial monogamist like Melissa Etheridge. Etheridge dumping Michaels really bought home that we shouldn't admire someone just because they're on our team. Melissa seems expert in getting her partners pregnant and then fleeing the scene a few years later.
