Presbyterians to Vote on Gay Marriage and Ordination

PresbyterianChurchx390 (Screengrab) | Advocate.com

Delegates meeting at the national conference of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in Minneapolis will vote Thursday on ordaining gays and lesbians, and whether same-sex marriages should be performed in the church. A yes vote would make the church the largest denomination in the country to marry same-sex couples.

According to The Sacramento Bee, earlier this week, “delegates in a committee took steps toward allowing gay marriage when they approved changing the definition of marriage from ‘a woman and a man’ to ‘two people.’”

Another committee approved the ordination of gays and lesbians in the Presbyterian Church.

Now, the resolutions move to the General Assembly for approval, after which they would need to be ratified by regional church leadership, the Bee reports.

A live video feed of the 219th General Assembly is available here. The conference also has a Twitter feed.

acceptance and acknowledgment from the churches are going to be key in getting equal rights in the u.s. having written that, I would like to add, what a sad state of affairs that we, in 2010 are still so petrified of facing our own mortality that we still, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary, insist on clinging to these iron age beliefs.

Well, the Evangelical Lutheran Church recently affirmed full and open acceptance of gays and lesbians in their denomination. And Unity churches and centers have for years been open and affirming of all people, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation. Slowly but surely, the old religious dinosaurs are dying off. Not quickly enough, of course, but churches are always generations behind the curve on social issues.

Finally, I might feel comfortable coming back to church, i grew up presbyterian and never heard anti-gay comments from church leadership. I still struggled with it myself. With an inclusive church that doesnt discriminate against gays I might be able to go back and not feel like an outcast!

Interesting that this story would appear today, when a Presbyterian minister in my hometown of Montclair, New Jersey, was "defrocked" for marrying her partner (http://www.northjersey.com/news/98001269_Out_of_the_closet__and_the_flock.html). Even in my beautiful, diverse, tolerant Montclair ... even in a Church that bills itself as progressive, inclusive and welcoming ... even in the year 2010 - the repellent, scab-covered head of Christian homophobia rises up to remind us of its continuing presence. The following appeared (see link attached) in t...oday's Montclair Times. Sad. Nauseating. But not completely unexpected from the same folk who brought us the dark ages, Crusades, witch-hunts and uncounted centuries of oppression. I live only a block away from this citadel of wholesomeness and family values, but doubt I'll be making a visit anytime soon.

Today, I am proud to be a Presbyterian... I hope this passes in our favor, however am grateful it is even being discussed. Months ago when I asked my minister if she would perform a same sex marriage in my church for me-- She said she would be honored! :)

Please God, this comes to pass. We desperately NEED a main-stream, Protestant, denomination to stand up and be counted for LGBT equality. Perhaps THEN, some of these 'christians' will show themselves to be worthy of the name.
