Expert provision in a leading centre for psychological research: – Reflecting the excellence of the University the School of Psychology has some of the world’s leading academic experts, research centres and laboratories. Our three research groups work on a diverse range of topics from child development and aging, through neuropsychology, stereotyping and cognition to more applied areas such as stress in the workplace, eating disorders, alcohol and drug dependency, football hooliganism, policing and forensic psychology. Reflecting its world class status the School attracts in the region of one million pounds of funding annually from the major research councils and the public and private sector. In 2007 the School had approaching three million pounds worth of active grant income. Consequently, the School has a strong and vibrant research and postgraduate community providing you with ample opportunity for participation and collaboration in world-class leading edge research.

Practical as well as academic relevance. – Our academic staff regularly advises external agencies on many national and international issues. Prof. David Canter is world renowned as the first person in the UK to provide what is known as 'offender profiles' to the police. Having so far contributed to well over 150 major police investigations he has also written and produced Channel 5's investigations series ‘Mapping Murder’. Prof. Kevin Browne has advised the European Commission, World Health Organisation and the World Bank on projects to prevent child abuse and promote child protection. Prof. Laurence Alison recently co-ordinated the U.K. Home Office’s evaluation of the Serious Crime Analysis Section (SCAS) of the National Crime faculty and was a key psychological advisor in the Metropolitan Police debrief of the July 7th London Bombings. Dr. Clifford Stott is one of the world’s leading experts on football crowd management and has advised UEFA, the Home Office, the European Council, the European Union and was also a lead consultant in the planning of crowd management for the 2004 Football European Championships in Portugal.

British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited but flexible – Our undergraduate programme is not only extremely interesting but satisfies the statutory requirements for pursuing various careers and pathways to postgraduate study within Psychology (including Clinical, Forensic and Educational Psychology). However, our programmes are designed to give a balance between the core curriculum required by the BPS and a choice of exciting modules taught by staff at the forefront of research and practice. At Liverpool, all the modules necessary for the BPS (Graduate Basis Registration) are taken in the second year, leaving you greater room for specialisation in your third year. Our degree programme also provides the opportunity for two weeks of assessed work experience, offering you practical experience in the field and an excellent opportunity for you to learn about and get ahead in your chosen career.

High student satisfaction – All of this means that we achieve extremely high levels of graduate satisfaction. For example, in the 2006 National Student Survey, the School ranked highest on overall graduate satisfaction in the Northwest region and was one of the highest nationally. But while we pride ourselves on providing a world class education, delivered by world class researchers at a world class university we also pride ourselves on our with friendly and open student support systems such that external assessors recently commended the School on this particular aspect of pastoral care.
