A:My favorite biographies are "Truman" by McCullough and "Einstein" by Isaacson. The subjects came alive for me, instead of being drowned in authorial minutiae. And if you'll accept early-20th-century as "historical," I really enjoy the novels of David Fulmer, especially those set in turn-of-the-century New Orleans. The series began with "Chasing the Devil's Tail."
