1. School funding panel: "The public is done listening"
If the current system for funding Wisconsin public schools does not change, the gap between rich and poor school districts will grow. That was the consensus among panelists Thursday afternoon at the "4th Street Forum" discussion, moderated by Denise Callaway, titled, "Political Dynamite: Paying for Wisconsin's Schools."
2. Dogs in costume? Yeah, I'm there.
This Saturday marks the seventh annual Dog Day Afternoon, a dog- and family-friendly event in Bay View that I mark on the calendar never to miss.
3. Hines, Evers join "4th Street Forum" education panel Thursday
Common Council president Willie Hines will join State Superintendent of Instruction Tony Evers in a "4th Street Forum" Thursday at noon at Turner Hall, 1034 N. 4th St.
4. Ald. Donovan: MPS should declare bankruptcy
This afternoon Milwaukee Ald. Bob Donovan issued a statement saying that Milwaukee Public Schools should wipe the slate clean via bankruptcy.
5. Most of Milwaukee is still waiting for "Waiting for Superman"
Although those packing the house at the Oriental Theatre were among the first Milwaukeeans to see Davis' Guggenheim's much-discussed "Waiting for Superman," the rest of Milwaukee still has to wait.
6. "Superman" coming to speak at children and families conference
The founder, president and CEO of the Harlem Children's Zone -- which the federal government hopes to recreate in 21 American neighborhoods -- and the "star" of the much-discussed "Waiting for Superman," Geoffrey Canada will speak in Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 22.

8. Argh, it's pirate time in Gurnee
Last week, when I wrote about KeyLime Cove in Gurnee, Ill., I noted that the waterpark resort understands the importance of fun events to keep folks coming back. So it behooves me to let you know that this weekend, the Cove hosts a celebration on Sunday, Sept. 19 in honor of national "Talk Like a Pirate Day."
9. When did I become a joiner?
I was never much of a joiner. As a kid I didn't even play organized sports. But now, suddenly, I've joined.

12. St. Marcus kicks campaign up a level ... to the roof!
If you've been reading our blogs, you know that Kohl's Cares for Kids is having a school popularity contest that will earn 20 schools $500,000 each, once the votes are tallied. Today, St. Marcus, 2215 N. Palmer St., is taking its campaign to win the half-mil to a higher level ... literally.
13. Midlife Isis: Can kids be happy with divorced parents?
The decision to transform our family was the biggest and most difficult decision of our lifetime. First and foremost, we had to answer the question: Can our kids be happy without having both parents under one roof? Or will this, inevitably, screw them up?

Kohl's Department Stores partnered with Discovery World and donated $2 million to create Kohl's Design It!, an educational program allowing kids to use advanced technology to turn designs into reality.
16. Brewers v. Astros ... score!
Although my son and I have been to dozens of games together, we've never scored one. Even now he's a little too young to really grasp it all, but he's old enough to watch and take and interest and even help out.

18. Midlife Isis: Am I having a midlife crisis?
I have been accused of being in the throws of a midlife crisis, and maybe I am. However, the words "midlife crisis" suggest that I'm hot-rodding sporty cars and chasing tail, which, unfortunately, isn't what's happening at all.

Kohl's Cares for Kids, which supports children's education and health, is celebrating its 10th anniversary and is giving 20 schools $500,000 each, based on your votes and mine.

David Sanchez, 18, who attends The Prairie School in Racine, was among the 15 inspiring young people named to PARADE magazine's first-ever All-America High School Service Team.
21. My new blog kicks off next week
Starting next week, I will run a weekly blog called "Midlife Isis." My life has changed a lot in the past six months, and this personal blog will focus on nearing what could be "midlife" as well as motherhood and challenging, unexpected life happenings.
