Access
to collections in the Institute Archives and Special Collections,
including materials on the web, is not authorization to publish
from them. Separate written application for permission to publish
must be made to the Institute Archives.
The
Institute Archives can grant permission to publish materials for
which it holds the copyright, and these include
- Printed
materials published by MIT
-
Many records created on behalf of the Institute
-
Materials in manuscript collections for which the donor has given
copyright to MIT
The
copyright law of the United States (Title
17, United States Code) does not allow us to grant permission
to publish materials we do not clearly own and puts the burden on
the researcher to identify the holder of the copyright and obtain
permission. We do not hold copyright for materials in Institute
records not created in the course of conducting Institute business
or in manuscript collections if the author has not specifically
given copyright to the MIT. It is the job of the researcher to determine
the holder of copyright and pursue the copyright owner or his or
her heirs for permission to publish if MIT does not hold the copyright.
For
permission to publish, write to Ms. Nora Murphy, Reference Archivist,
MIT Institute Archives and Special Collections. Please submit requests
by regular mail (Building 14N-118, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge,
MA 02139-4307) or FAX (617.258.7305). Do not send requests via e-mail.
Please be as specific as possible about what records you would like
permission to publish.
