The Graduate Program at the Institute
|
|
The Institute is a major centre for biomedical research and welcomes graduate students from a wide variety of disciplines. They can work here for degrees from Heidelberg University, with which the Institute is affiliated, or from other universities.
For details of the research work at the MPI, see the web sites of the following 3 main scientific departments:
Around 60 PhD students from many different countries and disciplines are currently working in these departments at the Institute and will receive doctorates from several different faculties at Heidelberg University (including the Biosciences Faculty, Chemistry Faculty and Physics Faculty). These faculties have their own specific requirements which students must fulfill.
The Institute has established a list of requirements which PhD students must fulfill, in addition to their thesis work, in order to obtain a doctorate from the Faculty of Biosciences. These currently include:
- regular meetings with advisors
- attendance at the 3-week Intensive Course which is held in the Institute each year
- attendance at the HOTTOP lunchtime seminars
- attendance at various other institute-wide, departmental and group seminars, and retreats. These activities should be documented on a certificate (Blue Sheet) which the faculty issues to each student on registration.
Bachelor and Master Degrees
The Bachelor and Master degree programs at German universities currently require a period of practical research work. This work can be done at the MPI for Medical Research.
