Christian Wulff, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, in Auschwitz

Speech by Christian Wulff, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, at the official commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp

"66 years ago today saw the beginning of the end of the suffering of the survivors of Auschwitz. The liberators had come ? at last. What the victims had to suffer in Auschwitz in the years up to then is inconceivable, unspeakable, indescribable. Even so, it needs to be grasped, told and described over and over again. Following a cynical selection process, hundreds of thousands were sent directly from the ramp to the gas chambers to die a terrible death. Children were separated from their parents, families were torn apart."Read more

German President Christian Wulff speaks at the "Falling Walls" conference

Tomorrow, the 9th November, it will be 21 years since thousands of East German citizens gathered on the east side of the border crossing at Bornholmer Strasse. Chanting: "Tor auf, Tor auf" (Open the gate, open the gate), they forced the opening of the Berlin Wall. The reason - after weeks of demonstrations - was a statement made at a press conference. The causes were complex. Read more

Speech by Christian Wulff, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, before the Grand National Assembly of Turkey

I offer my warmest greetings to you and the people of Turkey and wish you all the best from my fellow Germans. It is a great honour to be the first German Federal President to address the Grand National Assembly. The invitation you extended demonstrates how intensive and close the ties between our two nations are. I am particularly pleased that my third state visit in the first 110 days of my term in office has brought me to your country. This reflects the great importance of relations between Turkey and the Federal Republic of Germany. Read more

Speech by Christian Wulff, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, to mark the twentieth anniversary of German Unity

Today we celebrate what we achieved twenty years ago: unity and right and freedom for our German fatherland. We recall that momentous day, a day such as few nations ever see. Today all those images of Berlin on the eve of 3 October flood through my mind: the people who stood in front of the Reichstag building; the moments of tingling suspense, just before midnight; the sound of the Freedom Bell ringing; the moment when the flag of unity was hoisted; people singing our national anthem; the joy; the tears; the cohesion at that defining moment in our history. Twenty years on, this still fills me with the greatest gratitude. Read more

Speech at a dinner in honour of the President of the Republic of Malawi, Ngwazi Professor Bingu wa Mutharika

It is a special honour and pleasure for me to welcome you to Schloss Bellevue as the first official guest during my term in office. For me this is an important sign of continuity - my predecessor, who is with us today and to whom I extend a particularly warm welcome, succeeded in lending Germany's relations with our neighbouring continent of Africa a new quality. Mr President, you are also here today in your capacity as Chairman of the African Union. This shows that Germany remains strongly committed to Africa. Read more

Inaugural speech by Federal President Christian Wulff - address after taking the oath of office in the German Bundestag

I'm sure no-one will find fault with me if I say that this is an important and moving moment for me. It fills me with joy and earnestness, with confidence and humility at the same time. For I'm aware of the great responsibility which comes with the office of Federal President. I'm grateful to be able to serve in this office: to serve Germany and the Germans, as well as everyone who lives in our country. Once again, there was a genuine election for the office of Federal President. I'd therefore like to take this opportunity to expressly thank Luc Jochimsen and Joachim Gauck for conducting themselves fairly during the last 30 days. Read more
