Intel® Extreme Masters is a computer gaming tournament now hitting its fifth season. In the past four seasons we all saw the best players in Counter-Strike 1.6, Warcraft 3 as well as World of Warcraft competing for a huge amount of prize money. Players meet on- and offline to prove their skills and give their fans a show they will remember for a long time. In its fifth season professional gamers from Europe, Asia and America battle throughout the season for the titles of the World Champion and their share of a total of 400,000 US Dollars in cash prizes – the highest prize purse for a global league. Real time strategy stages comeback at the Intel Extreme Masters after Warcraft 3 made its appearance in seasons 1 and 2. StarCraft II becomes part of the Intel Extreme Masters, as the third main title alongside Counter-Strike and Quake Live.

And what a year it has been.
Not only have there been two LAN tournaments, we've had four major leagues and numerous smaller cups keeping teams active during the mid-LAN seasons. The gap between LANs hasn't been as big as last year, but it still remained a challenge to stay together as a team throughout the season. For that reason it's even more remarkable that MGCs such as Dignitas and Speedlink have remained true to the game and kept supporting their players through active periods and especially during times where LANs were scarce.
Nevertheless it's apparent most teams have had many line up changes throughout the year. Often two or three core members stayed put to preserve the name of the team, while new players came and went. While the stability of the team suffered and the tactics were probably not as brilliant as in the idle.ee days, new players were given the opportunity to show what they're worth.
2010 has also seen the official demise of Punkbuster. With the Speedlink Anticheat we might have entered a cheat-free era - perhaps some of us can remember that feeling from five years back.
With new MGCs picking up Enemy Territory teams such as The Last Resort and k1ck eSports, we can start the new year with high expectations.
The next pages show a summary of the six big events of 2010.
