Stepping up economic relations with Singapore

In Singapore Chancellor Angela Merkel has emphasised the "close relations that exist between Germany and Singapore". Relations are particularly close in the economic sphere. Singapore has an incredibly dynamic economy, declared the Chancellor. This is an excellent starting point for German businesses, which feel very much at home in Singapore, she added.

G8 summit

G8 - safety at all nuclear power plants to be reviewed

The G8 states are committed to ensuring the highest safety standards for nuclear power plants. Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that it has become clear that all states are in favour of regular and rigorous safety reviews for all nuclear power plants. On the second day of the summit, the G8 states agreed to accord financial assistance worth several billion euros to Egypt and Tunisia, and to establish the "Deauville Partnership".

Energy Strategy

The way toward the energy of the future

The German government now aims to implement the Energy Strategy it adopted in late 2010 more swiftly and more rigorously than originally intended. Only ten years from now the last nuclear power plants are to be closed down. Germany aims to enter the age of renewables as quickly as possible. Speaking in Berlin, Chancellor Angela Merkel and three of her ministers presented in detail the steps that will be involved. No provision has been made for a way back.

Germany supports the bid of French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde for the post of Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. "She has both the expertise and the experience at international level," declared Federal Government Spokesman Steffen Seibert.

D115 hotline – start of normal operation

The central hotline for public authorities with the number 115 has proved its worth as a citizens’ service. On this telephone number, citizens receive information on administrative issues. After testing the service for two years, it now starts normal operation.
