As a DM, you can decide from several methods to allow your players to roll up their characters.
For the official campaign that comes with Neverwinter Nights, they have choosen to use the point buy system when the player creates their characters. Here's how it works:
Currently (03/04/2002) they are looking at giving the player 30 points to distribute.
There are six abilities to distribute the points over (Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma, Constitution, Dexterity)
You can choose whatever ability score you want for each one, and simply reduce the cost from the 30 points you have.
For example: If I want my fighter to have 18 strength, it will cost me 16 points from the 30 points I started with. So now I have 14 points left to distribute.
