Kindle Personal Documents Service

Kindle Personal Documents Service makes it easy to take your personal documents with you, eliminating the need to print.

You can send your personal documents to your registered Kindle devices, supported Kindle reading applications, and your Kindle Library through the Send to Kindle application or your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address.

You can view and download stored personal documents from your Kindle Library on Kindle Fire, Kindle Keyboard (with the latest software update, version 3.3), Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle for Android (running Kindle app version 3.5 or greater) and Kindle for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch (running Kindle app version 2.9 or greater). Kindle Personal Documents Service is currently not supported on other free Kindle Reading Applications. Just as with Kindle books, Whispersync automatically synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks, and annotations for personal documents that have been converted into Kindle format (with the exception of PDFs and files transferred via USB) across your supported Kindle devices and Kindle reading applications.

Send to Kindle Application

Send to Kindle for PC and Send to Kindle for Mac are  free applications that let you easily send your personal documents to your registered Kindle devices, supported Kindle reading applications, and your Kindle Library from your computer.

Send to Kindle for PC is available to download at www.amazon.com/sendtokindle/pc and Send to Kindle for Mac is available for download at www.amazon.com/sendtokindle/mac.

Send-to-Kindle E-mail Address

You and your approved contacts can send personal documents to your registered Kindle devices, supported Kindle reading applications, and your Kindle Library in the Amazon Cloud by e-mailing them to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address ([name]@kindle.com). Your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address is a unique e-mail address assigned to your Kindle device or supported Kindle reading application upon registration.

To successfully send personal documents using your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address, you must ensure that:

Attach the document to a new e-mail or forward an existing e-mail with the document attached to the Send-to-Kindle e-mail address associated with your Kindle device or Kindle reading application.

A subject is not necessary in the e-mail, unless you'd prefer to have the document converted to the Kindle format so you can take advantage of functionality such as variable font size and annotations. To have a document converted to Kindle format (.azw), the subject line should be "convert" when e-mailing a personal document to your Send-to-Kindle address.

Each Send-to-Kindle e-mail address can also be modified to send personal documents to a supported Kindle device via Wi-Fi, if available, and to the e-mail address associated with the Amazon account to which the device is registered. Modify your Send-to-Kindle address from [name]@kindle.com to [name]@free.kindle.com. If the document can't be delivered over Wi-Fi to your Kindle device, you can use the e-mail to download the file to your computer and transfer it to your Kindle device using a USB connection.

Personal documents in supported file formats smaller than 5 MB are typically delivered to your Kindle device within five minutes (per document) if your device is connected wirelessly. Personal documents larger than 5 MB or in some file formats (such as PDF files) may take longer. Your e-mail provider may have additional limitations on file size.

Keep in mind:

  • The file size of each attached personal document must be 50MB or less (before compression in a ZIP file).
  • The submitted e-mail must contain no more than 25 attached personal documents.
  • The submitted e-mail must target less than 15 distinct Send-to-Kindle e-mail addresses.
  • The attached personal document must be a supported file type.
  • If you choose to store your personal documents, they will be stored in your Kindle Library until you delete them from Manage Your Kindle.
  • If you choose to not store your personal documents in your Kindle Library and your device is not connected wirelessly, we will attempt to deliver your personal documents once your device is connected wirelessly for up to 60 days. Personal documents not delivered within this time period will be deleted.

Modifying your Send-to-Kindle E-mail address

You can modify your Send-to-Kindle E-mail address through Manage Your Kindle. Click on Personal Documents Settings on the left side of the screen. Under "Send-to-Kindle E-mail Settings," click on "Edit" next to the e-mail address. Enter your preferred e-mail address and click "Update" to complete the change.

Your Use of the Kindle Personal Documents Service

You may send personal documents to your supported devices for your personal, non-commercial use only. You may not send or authorize the sending of documents from automated distribution services. We may limit the volume or number of documents you may send, download, or store.

There is no limit on the number of devices that can simultaneously use a single personal document.

Your Approved Personal Document E-mail List

To prevent spam, you can only receive personal documents at your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address from e-mail addresses you have approved on the Manage Your Kindle page. Here is how to set up your Approved Personal Document E-mail List:

  1. Visit Manage Your Kindle and sign in with your Amazon account e-mail address and password.
  2. Select "Personal Document Settings" from the left side menu.
  3. Under the heading "Approved Personal Document E-mail List," select "Add a new approved e-mail address."
  4. Enter the e-mail address and select "Add Address."

Deleting Your Approved Contacts

To remove an approved e-mail address, follow the steps above, but select "Delete" next to the address you wish to remove from your Approved Personal Document E-mail List. You'll no longer be able to receive personal documents sent from this e-mail address.

Personal Document Storage

When you send personal documents using your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address, your documents are automatically stored in your Kindle Library in the Amazon Cloud.

You can view and download stored personal documents from your Kindle Library on Kindle Fire, Kindle Keyboard (with the latest software update, version 3.3), Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle for Android App (running Kindle app version 3.5 or greater) and Kindle App for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch (running Kindle app version 2.9 or greater).

To disable Personal Document Archiving:

  1. Open Manage Your Kindle
  2. Select Personal Document Settings.
  3. Select "Edit" under the heading Personal Document Archiving.

  4. Once you select "Edit" you will be given the option to enable or disable personal document archiving in your Kindle Library.

Note: Your Kindle Library can hold up of 5 GB of personal documents.

Managing Personal Documents Stored in Your Kindle Library

You can manage your personal documents stored in your Kindle Library through Manage Your Kindle.

Select the Personal Documents link on the left to view all your personal documents stored in your Kindle Library.

Deliver a personal document stored in your Kindle Library

After logging into Manage Your Kindle, click the Actions button next to the personal document you wish to deliver to your registered Kindle device or supported Kindle reading application. Select "Deliver to my" and choose from the available Kindle devices or Kindle reading applications listed.

Unlike other content stored in your Kindle Library, you won't see the option to "Download & transfer via USB" for your stored personal documents. See Transferring Personal Documents Via USB to Your Kindle Device for instructions on how to send personal documents from your computer to your Kindle device.

Permanently remove personal documents stored in your Kindle Library

After logging into Manage Your Kindle, click the Actions button next to the personal document you wish to permanently delete from your Kindle Library. Choose "Delete from library" to permanently remove the item from your Kindle Library.

Existing copies of the personal document already on your device(s) will not be removed unless you delete them directly from the device.

Transferring Personal Documents Via USB to Your Kindle Device

To transfer a personal document from your computer via USB to your Kindle, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Touch, or Kindle Fire, you'll need to send the personal document as an attachment to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address using the [name]@free.kindle.com address. An e-mail notification will be sent to the e-mail address associated with the Amazon account to which your Kindle device is registered.

Saving the document to your computer

Follow the instructions within the e-mail to download the document to your computer. You may be prompted to open or save the file; choose "Save" and select a location that is easy to find again, such as the desktop. Once the file has been saved, connect your Kindle device to your computer using a USB cable.

Connecting your Kindle device to your computer

Plug the larger end of a USB cable into an available USB port or a powered USB hub connected to your computer, and connect the other end of the USB cable to the micro-USB port on the bottom of your device.

When connected to your computer, your Kindle device will go into USB drive mode. Your wireless service is temporarily shut off and you will not receive any of your subscriptions while in this mode.

Once connected, your Kindle device will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear. For Windows users, this is typically in the "Computer" or "My Computer" menu. For Mac users, the drive will appear on the desktop.

Transferring personal documents to your Kindle

Open the Kindle drive. You will see several folders inside, one of which will be named "documents." This is the folder you will move the downloaded file into.

  1. Locate the downloaded file and copy it into the documents folder. You can generally copy files by clicking and dragging the file to the folder.
  2. Safely eject your Kindle device from the computer and unplug the USB cable. Your content will appear on the Home screen, or on a Kindle Fire, tap Docs from the Home screen to open your Docs content library.

Kindle Personal Documents Service Fees

Kindle Personal Documents Service doesn't charge fees for delivery of personal documents to Kindle devices over Wi-Fi or to supported Kindle reading applications.

Fees for the Kindle Personal Documents Service via Whispernet are based on the size of the file submitted (before compression if you use a .zip file), your country, and where you're accessing Whispernet. Personal documents service fees will only be charged for documents that are successfully delivered to your Kindle device via Whispernet. Personal documents service fees are rounded up to the next whole MB and apply to each personal document delivered via Whispernet to each Kindle device.

  • For Kindle device users living in the United States, the Kindle Personal Documents Service fee via Whispernet is $.15 per megabyte while inside the United States and $.99 per megabyte when traveling outside the United States.
  • For Kindle device users living outside the United States, the Kindle Personal Documents Service fee via Whispernet is $.99 (USD) per megabyte.
  • Kindle Personal Documents Service is not available via Whispernet in Canada. Please see Transferring Personal Documents via USB for information about e-mailing personal documents to your computer for USB transfer to your Kindle device.

Note: You can also send your personal documents via e-mail as attachments to [name]@free.kindle.com. To have a document converted to Kindle format (.azw), the subject line should be "convert." Kindle Personal Documents Service will attempt to deliver your personal documents to your Kindle device via Wi-Fi when connected, and to the e-mail address associated with the Amazon account to which the device is registered. You can use the e-mail to download the file to your computer and transfer it to your Kindle device using a USB connection.

Aggregation of fees for Kindle Personal Documents Service

If you send multiple documents for conversion, consecutive orders that cost less than $5.00 may be combined into one transaction and appear as a single charge.

Setting your personal documents charge limit

You can set the maximum charge allowed for a single personal document sent wirelessly to your Kindle device through Manage Your Kindle. Any personal document you sent that exceeds this charge will be stored in your Kindle Library if Personal Document Archiving settings are enabled in Manage Your Kindle.

To set the charge limit for Kindle Personal Documents Service:

  1. Visit Manage Your Kindle.
  2. Select Personal Document Settings from the left hand menu.
  3. Scroll down to the heading "Whispernet Delivery Options."
  4. Select "Edit" on the right hand side of the page.
  5. Enter your preferred personal document charge limit.
  6. Click "Update."

The limit you set is a per document limit. If you send multiple documents for conversion in a .zip file, the total aggregated charge for conversion of all the documents may exceed your per document limit. As long as each document's charge is below the limit, conversion and delivery will be successful.

Supported File Types

Kindle Personal Documents Service supports multiple file types, including:

  • Microsoft Word (.DOC, .DOCX)
  • HTML (.HTML, .HTM)
  • RTF (.RTF)
  • JPEG (.JPEG, .JPG)
  • Kindle Format (.MOBI, .AZW)
  • GIF (.GIF)
  • PNG (.PNG)
  • BMP (.BMP)
  • PDF (.PDF)

The above file types can also be combined in a compressed ZIP (.ZIP) file. ZIP files are automatically opened up by the conversion service, converted to the Kindle format if needed, and stored in your Kindle Library. Some complex PDF files might not format correctly on your Kindle or Kindle reading application.

If you prefer to have your personal PDF documents converted to the Kindle format so you can take advantage of Kindle functionality such as variable font size, annotation, Text-to-Speech, Whispersync, etc., type "convert" in the subject of the e-mail when you submit your personal document to your Send-to-Kindle e-mail address.
