A sign of life for Grand Avenue?
I’ve said this before, but I like the Grand Avenue Mall. It’s an easy lunch destination for Downtown workers, and it still has a lot of unrealized potential. It saddens me that most have written it off for dead, and I wish the City or the owners would provide a serious incentive for a few major anchor stores to come and stay for a while.
Until that happens – or if that happens – I’m visiting small sandwich places like La Delicatesse or browsing TJ Maxx on my lunch hour. Today, I took a look at the new OfficeMax on the first floor.
Kudos to this place for expanding and remodeling. It actually looks a lot like an Apple Store, except that it doesn’t sell any Apple products.
Still, many might consider this expansion a risky proposition, but I believe in the "build it and they will come" model. That’s how I launched OnMilwaukee.com 15 years ago. That’s how the Brewers completed Miller Park in the face of all the skeptics. That’s how it will have to be at Grand Avenue, and it can work: just look at the YMCA upstairs.
If the Grand Avenue Mall does shutter, at least I won’t be one of those people complaining how sad it is, but never visited, myself. For me, I’ll continue to visit and shop and show my support.
This mall can work Downtown, it just needs people to visit, and visit often. I’m adding OfficeMax to the top of my list for office supplies.

My concern is that Boston Store's lease is up in Feburary 2014. Wisconsin Electric owns the building. What is Mayor Barrett doing to keep the store open? The county? State? Would be a disaster for the grand Avenue if it closed.I do as much shopping as i can at Boston Store.Recently talked to a cleark in men's wear. she told me that department was doing well--makeing their goals but she did not know how well the rest of the store was doing. Assume women's clothing does very well. Home store--no idea.

I just visited recently for the first time in a while and discovered the used book store on the ground floor of -- is it still called this? -- the new arcade. (Around the corner from Applebee's.) I also liked the vibe in the mall in general - there were a lot more people in there than I expected. Definitely has a way to go, but showing some signs of rejuvenation!

Aisha Tyler talks "Archer" in Milwaukee and more
Published April 4, 2013
I'm super excited for Saturday's "Archer Live," the in-person incarnation of the hit FX show that blows me away every week. I'll just throw it out there: "Archer," the animated spy comedy is not only the funniest show on TV now, but it ranks among the funniest shows of all time. Filthy, witty and beautifully drawn, it packs an amazing amount of comedy into every episode. In advance of the show, I spoke to Aisha Tyler (Lana Kane) by phone.
Milwaukee Talks: FM 102.1 music director Michelle Rutkowski
Published April 4, 2013
Michelle Rutkowski is the person you can thank (or blame) for the music you hear on FM 102.1. As music director, she's constantly scouting out new music and working with record labels to pick the station's lineup. And, because FM102.1 isn't affiliated with other alternative stations around the country, Rutkowski selects songs tailored for Milwaukee listeners. But Rutkowski is also a mid-day DJ. We caught up with her in this latest Milwaukee Talks.
Rebirth and redemption, Vegas style
Published March 28, 2013
OnMilwaukee.com Publisher Andy Tarnoff has stopped counting how many times he's been to Las Vegas. He certainly didn't go this March expecting any huge surprises. As usual, he was wrong. He came to this realization as he sat in a comfy, leather chair, with an IV attached to his wrist and oxygen tubes in his nose. Before you panic, that experience was actually planned, but more on that later.
Look out soccer moms, the Volvo XC60 is coming through
Published March 26, 2013
I have a soft spot for Swedish cars, having owned two Saabs and one Volvo. And Volvo is even more near and dear to me: I learned to drive on my parents' 1987 Volvo 740. So I was open-minded when it came to evaluate the latest car that Fields Auto Group lent me to review, the 2013 Volvo XC60. I've always been just a little curious about this car, but I passed it up when buying our 2011 BMW X3.
Why do we live here?
Published March 25, 2013
That's not a rhetorical question. There are many, many, many reasons why I love Milwaukee, and why I started OnMilwaukee.com in 1998. But it's the end of March, and the temperature is hovering around freezing. I'm seriously wondering why we live here.
"Working" media, Arizona style
Published March 18, 2013
It's hard to call this spring training trip work. It definitely is, because as I do every year, I strive to take our readers along for the ride. Inevitably, when I tell people I come to Arizona, they always say, with a glint in their eyes, "I've always wanted to do that!" And I always tell them that they should.

In support of the winter water park experience

Everyone knows that Wisconsin Dells water parks are a ton of fun in the summer. But how about in the winter? OnMilwaukee.com Publisher Andy Tarnoff took his family to the Wilderness Resort, a 600-acre property in the Dells. Spoiler alert: his 4-year-old daughter loved it.
The race to baseball and beyond
Published March 16, 2013
Last I blogged, we were racing down a mountain, halfway between Vegas and Phoenix, struggling to make it to Maryvale Baseball Park by first pitch. After hitting every red light in Maricopa County, we arrived in time for the third batter. But we didn't see much baseball, anyway.
Leaving Las Vegas ... in a hurry
Published March 15, 2013
This didn't go exactly as planned. Yes, I'm speeding through the Arizona desert in a humungous white Chevy Suburban, while my friend from college, Paul, handles the driving for now. If we don't encounter any setbacks, we should arrive at Maryvale Baseball Park just in time for first pitch.
