Biden to Milwaukee student: People love chocolate
This morning, Jenny Aicher, a teacher at Downtown Montessori in Bay View, wrote to share some big news on campus.
A 7-year-old, second-grade student in her class received a handwritten note from Vice President Joe Biden.
"Myles and I were having lunch one day when he said, 'Barb, I have a really good idea'," recalls Downtown Montessori reading specialist Barb Rankin. "Like any good teacher I bit and asked what his good idea was. He went on to say, 'If people shot chocolate bullets then no one will get hurt and no one will be sad.'
"I could not argue with this logic so I suggested we share this good idea with the people who have more power than I do, like President Obama, Vice President Biden and U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore. Myles wrote the letters and they were placed in the mail. A few weeks ago we heard from Rep. Moore and then today from Vice President Biden."
Myles Nelson's letter, short and sweet, read, "Dear Vice President Biden, I have a great idea to help make our country safer, better and the best. I think guns should shoot out chocolate bullets. Then no one will get killed and no one will be sad."
And the reply, which arrived today:
"Dear Myles," Biden began, in a handwritten note dated April 30, 2013, on Vice Presidential note paper, "I am sorry it took me so very long to respond to your letter. I really like your idea. If we had guns that shot chocolate not only would our country be safer, it would be happier. People love chocolate. You are a good boy, Joe Biden."
Argue if you must with the idea, but Biden is clearly correct on a number of points, not least of which is that Myles is, most likely, a good boy.

Call it the worst-kept secret or the best-kept secret - depending on your point of view - but the American Geographical Society Library at UW-Milwaukee's Golda Meir Library is one of the best geography resources in the country. The collection holds more than a million items, ranging from maps and atlases to pamphlets and journals, globes and photographs of all kinds. Though it is housed in Milwaukee, the AGS collection has roots in New York and covers the entire planet.

The Miller Caves, which are a featured part of the Miller Brewery tours, were excavated in 1850, making them nearly as old as the city itself. This cool, historic subterranean space is alive again with beer dinners and, now, as a concert venue.

Many older Brew City neighborhoods - Walker's Point, Bay View, the East Side - have traces of the kind of row house culture that defines many East Coast cities. But row upon row of townhouses never really seemed to catch on here. Still, you can see hints of the row house trying to sprout up in Milwaukee.
Menomonee Valley park builds bridges to rolling urban green space

The new Three Bridges Park, which stretches from Mitchell Park on the east to the Urban Ecology Center at 37th Street on the west, is a 24-acre green space with lots of river access and plenty of rolling hills - man-made kettles, eskers and kames hills. It is due to open on July 20.

When I moved to Milwaukee in 1983 I lived in Walker's Point and spent a lot of time on the corner of 5th and National. And I can assure you a Walker's Point Food Crawl back then would involve Rudy's, Acapulco, a ham and egger kitty corner from Tech on National and a couple bodegas, at best. But, as you know, that's all changed and there's more than enough gastronomic activity in the heart of old George Walker's town to fuel a marathon of eating that could last months.
