3.0 out of 5 stars easy to use in the right space, but kind of cheap
I just received this and it installed in just a few minutes. Anyone else reviewing this that claimed it was too hard to open with one hand probably has it tightened too far. There is a fine balance between too tight to open easily and too loose to be stable. But it only took a couple twists of the pressure mounts for me to determine the right balance.

I spent 3 months undecided about what gate to buy to keep our small dog (about 6 pounds) in our kitchen area but still allow easy access through the doorway for our family including 2 children ages 5 and 7. Our doorway was exactly 48 inches (4 feet) wide and we wanted something that was pressure mounted so as not to have to drill into the wood. We have had the gate now 2 days and I only wish I had ordered sooner. Here are my thoughts about the gate:

1) Cheap - wow - for a metal wide, step through gate, you certainly can't beat this price (bonus - even has super saver shipping!)

2) Easy to install - my 5 year old son "helped" me. Was out of the box and ready for use in under 10 minutes. Notes - we have exactly a 48 inch opening and used both extensions (6 inch and 12 inch). If you have a space that is just under that - say 47 or 47 1/2, I don't think this gate will work for you with these extensions. We had JUST enough space to get the gate in place and tension it enough to hold in place. I believe they do sell a 3 inch extension separately however. For the price, however, you may still come out ahead of other gates even if you have to buy that.

3) Sturdiness - certainly sturdy enough for a pet and heavy everyday use. We used both both extensions and because of that, there is some flexing where they connect. Not sure I would 100% trust it for use with a strong toddler, but works great for our needs.

4) Latch / opening mechanism - I have uploaded pictures as this gate has a different latch than any of the other Regalo gates I have seen pics of. Maybe they changed it recently as I did see one review involving harm to a child from the latch mechanism. It is a very simple mechanism - basically a locking pin attached to a plastic slide piece. You slide it and then you can lift and swing the gate open. Since we are using only for the dog, the slide step is overkill for us (and my 5 year old could NOT do it). To "fix" this, I simply slid the lock to the "open" position and used a white zip tie to keep it in place. Now all we have to do is lift and swing - easy as pie, but obviously still works to keep the dog in place.

5) Step over - this gate does have a 1 inch bar you have to step over. Yes, I did already stub my toe once, however we are used to our other gate which has a threshold you step on, so just a matter of getting used to it no doubt.

6) Width - The walk through width seems just fine. Not quite as wide as our other gate, but easy enough for both hubby and I to walk through without turning sideways or anything.

7) Gate portion - STAYS OPEN - this was a key feature for me. I needed the gate to stay open at times, when the dog was hanging out with the family or was outside. It also swings open in either direction which was also important to me.

8) Width of bars - I read some reviews that the bars were wider on the side - as you can see in the picture, the bars are nice and narrow. No way our pup can get through!!!

All in all, I would highly recommend this gate. I am soooo glad I finally bought it!

I read the other reviews before purchasing and carefully measured the opening I planned to block with this gate to make sure it would work. Because, as other reviewers have stated, this is not a gate that fits openings 29" - 52" like the product description lists. This gate will fit in an opening that is approximately 29-32", roughly 35-38" with just the 6" extension, approximately 42-45" with just the 12" extension, and roughly 48-51" with both extensions. Unfortunately, if your opening falls in those in between sizes, you're going to find that you can't get a good fit. Either it's too big with the extension(s) added that you can't get it in place or w/o the extensions it's not very sturdy because you have to push the pressure mounts to the extreme end of their length.

My biggest issue with this gate is that it seems really flimsy and cheap compared to the Northstates, Evenflo & KidCo gates we have in other doorways thru-out the house. The overall construction is made of poorly done welds against the thin metal tubes. Since I put this in an area that gets high traffic, I'm concerned about how long it will hold up. But I guess that's what you get when you buy the cheaper option.

We're going to try it for awhile and see how it goes.

This gate says it fits openings up to 50". Because it uses an extension system, that isn't entirely accurate. It won't fit our 48" opening because using one extension isn't wide enough for the tension knobs to do anything and using two extensions makes it too wide to fit in the doorway even before any tightening. We removed the adjuster knobs on one side of the gate thinking we could use the knobs on the other side to tighten it firmly against the wall. At that point, we could get it to fit very securely at the bottom of the gate, but it wouldn't fit the top. Keeping it snug in the doorway meant that it was too tight to open and close. Loosening the knobs just until it was loose enough to open and close made the whole thing loose enough to knock out of the doorway with a minor bump (much less than a toddler's shaking and pulling).

I'm not sure if the adjustment problems are because it just doesn't fit the space that it says it should and our attempted modification didn't work, or because it's a poor design. The problems we had with the top knobs of the gate makes me think it's just a bad product. I really can't see any way to keep it tight in the doorway and still have it open and close as intended. Either way, it's marketed to fit certain applications and in some cases, it simply doesn't.

I received it this afternoon to replace an equally disappointing Dreambaby gate and this one is a flop as well. I repackaged it and sealed up the box already. I'm very frustrated with these types of gates. I'm beginning to wonder whether any of them really work as intended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought to keep dog out., January 7, 2010

I bought this to keep my dog out of the living room thus off the couch. It was very easy to put together and fit perfectly. I like the fact it has its own gate so we don't have to take it down to walk thru. The dog is a 65lb pit mix and doesn't seem to challenge getting thru. It is an attractive durable gate. Also want to mention the tension adjustments are very long which allows for an even wider fit. Very pleased with this product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Measurements tricky, February 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Regalo Easy Open 52 Inch Super Wide Walk Thru Gate - White (Baby Product)
I was so excited when I received the product because it seemed like it would be perfect and sturdy enough. The width without the extensions was too small for the area needed. Since it comes with 2 extensions (large and small), I tried each one individually and it was still not enough. With both added on, it was too much and was larger than the area needed. The details on the product should be specific on the measurements with each extension added on and without. Highly disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Fitting and Unstable Gate, February 4, 2011

I purchased the gate to keep my dog from going upstairs. The width of the stairway is 47 inches. The gate with the large section required full extension of all four asjusting bolts. This left very little of the threaded adjusting bolt inside of the gate for stability. To add to the instability, the adjusting bolts go through thin plastic caps on the ends of the gate sections. Overall the gate is poorly designed. Although the description states that it will fit openings from 29 to 52 inches there are points where adding the next section is too large to fit the opening and fully extending the adjusting bolts is too unstable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great, August 7, 2010

Purchased this for my puppy. This is not made very sturdy and the handle is somewhat cheaply made. If your doorway is not a certain size this will not fit. I have a 34 inch door way and it does not fit.

1.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!, December 2, 2011

This review is from: Regalo Easy Open 52 Inch Super Wide Walk Thru Gate - White (Baby Product)
We purchased this gate because it was cheap and seemed like it would work. However, when we received it, there were unsightly weld spots on the frame which made the product look very cheap. Secondly, it was flimsy when mounted and the door would not function properly. The plastic molding was about .5 inches too high and the door would not close. After we returned it to amazon, we purchased a more expensive Dreambaby model, the Dreambaby model works like a dream! (haha) Easy to set up and works well. I strongly recommend not purchasing this Regalo product!

1.0 out of 5 stars doesn't work for a 48 inch doorway, December 8, 2011

This review is from: Regalo Easy Open 52 Inch Super Wide Walk Thru Gate - White (Baby Product)
I couldn't assemble the gate in the doorway because if i used both extenders it wouldn't fit in and if i removed the smallest one it won't expand enough to fit securely. If you have a small dog in this situation they can walk right through the sides.
