1. What's your flying car?
Flying Car, June 1-10, replaces Milwaukee Innovation Week and ironically happens just one month after Terrafugia Inc., the developer of the Transition street-legal airplane, announced its vision for the future of personal transportation.
2. The robots are coming!
To me, this is THE issue, THE question for our time. The robots are coming in massive numbers. How can we get ahead of them and figure out what we're going to do with workers whose jobs have been replaced by mechanical employees?
3. Bayshore gets a slew of new stores
Bayshore Town Center announced today the advent of several new retail stores, as well as the renovation and relocation of several existing tenants.
4. Filing for unemployment sucks
An unexpected job loss is a shock to your system and an absolutely frightening experience. It takes you through an array of unfamiliar emotions. Uncertainty, anxiety, anger and stress can all set in very quick.
5. My 1997 premonition
Preparing to hang three photos I took in 1997, I noticed something amazing about the second photo that I had never noticed before: the building in the center of the frame is CityCenter. The viewfinder is looking right at our new office suite. When I shot that photo, I had no idea what that building was. It just looked cool.
6. Happy Small Business Week, Milwaukee
We're all in it together, so this week the City of Milwaukee's Small Business Conference will feature meetings, conferences, work shops, round tables and more. All with the goal of growing and developing the area's business arena. Kickoff is tonight with events all week.
7. Rhino Foods: more than cans of crickets
Rhino Food Store, 7411 W. Hampton Ave., is what I always want Pacific Produce to be: cheap, unoffensive to my sense of smell and filled with my favorite Asian foods and items.
8. What's with H&M;'s sizing?
Ninety-eight percent of my wardrobe is a size 6, and so, naturally, that's the size I grabbed at H&M.; However, I could barely pull the pants above my knees. So I got an 8. Better, but still too small.
9. USA Today: Milwaukee leads in percentage growth of college graduates
Twenty-somethings have flocked to America's largest metros since 2006, according to USA Today. And Milwaukee has one of the largest growth percentages among that group.
10. What's the appeal of Adirondack chairs?
While they seem more Madison than Milwaukee, they're popping up everywhere now that the weather is turning. Oddly, though, I rarely see people sitting in these Adirondack chairs.
11. Milwaukee workers march for better wages
Members of Raise Up MKE, a local group with ties to a growing national movement of retail workers, is striking and rallying across Milwaukee today.
12. Spring American-made mens' fashion
Spring is finally here (I think). There has been a resurgence in American made goods recently, and I've compiled a list of my favorite things for spring.
13. Eight random observations about how I shop
I generally like shopping, and I appreciate good stuff, great service and cool design. Yet, like most, I also love a good deal. So, indulge me - this retail week - if you will, here are eight random observations about how I shop today.
14. Stuff I want, stuff I don't want
I'm an American and so, by definition, I am wired to want to buy stuff. And there's plenty of stuff I want to buy. Here are a couple of things that top my long list. As well as some stuff I don't want.
15. Donate clothes, get 30 percent off, $25 gift card at Luci Boutique
Bring in any old top or dress in good condition and Luci Boutique will give you 30 percent off your entire purchase, plus a $25 gift card.
16. The Fyxation Quiver: The first and last bike you'll ever need
The frame starts out as one would expect, with 4130 chromoly tubing in "a traditional double triangle design with a horizontal top tube, aero profile fork and horizontal dropouts to easily accommodate a singlespeed, fixed, or internal gear hub." But here is where it gets interesting. "The Quiver also ships with our proprietary derailleur hanger and removable cable stops so it can be built up as a geared road bike with front and rear derailleurs."
17. Great brands grow from the inside out
In this age of social media, companies participate in their brands, rather than control them, according authors Will Ruch and Pat Nazemetz. They contend that companies that align their internal brands with their human resource policies can gain a competitive advantage.
18. Third Ward's (shoo) adds space, welcomes Sachen as neighbor
Store store, (shoo) has expanded its Milwaukee location in the Historic Third Ward by adding 1,000 square feet at 241 N. Broadway. The women and men's shoe store also is adding a new retail neighbor.
19. "Drink Wisconsinbly" Kickstarter campaign has one day remaining
Milwaukeean Richard Lorbach launched a Kickstarter campaign in late March to bulk-produce hand-crafted neon signs that say "Drink Wisconsinbly" along with other memorabilia and T-shirts.
20. Perfection: The 2013 Jaguar XJ
If I was a less verbose writer, I could sum up the 2013 Jaguar XJ in one word: perfection. But that wouldn't make for much of a review, and after a month with the XJ that Fields Jaguar in Waukesha loaned me, I have so much more to say. I'll start with this: if you're the kind of person who can afford to spend $73,000 on a car, and you require something with four seats, this is the car you should buy. Run, don't walk, to Fields Jaguar and buy it. Now.
21. Get "Boston Strong" with these charity T-shirts
Milwaukee company Ink to the People, 6600 W. Calumet Rd., is helping two young Boston-area college students raise money for the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy on April 15.
22. Brenner Brewing Company is a go
Mike Brenner raised $750,000 and says he will now be able to open the Brenner Brewing Company. So what's next?
23. Kmart "Ships its Pants"
It's simple, effect and darn funny. The opening line is great, and unlike some spots it really doesn't take the gag too far. Kmart's new #shipmypants ad works.
24. A sign of life for Grand Avenue?
I've said this before, but I like the Grand Avenue Mall. It's an easy lunch destination for Downtown workers, and it still has a lot of unrealized potential. It saddens me that most have written it off for dead, and I wish the City or the owners would provide a serious incentive for a few major anchor stores to come and stay for a while.
25. Milwaukee makes Techie's list
At OnMilwaukee.com we've known and lived this for years. But, it's great to see recognition for Milwaukee on a new list from Technie.com. Milwaukee ranks, with nine others, on this new list of "10 Most Unexpected Cities for High-Tech Innovation."
