Today, more than 2,500 current and retired GE employees, plus about 150 other volunteers, are walking into 16 Milwaukee Public Schools and four Waukesha Public Schools (as well as Greenfield High School) to paint, clean, organize and landscape to help the schools plan for the first day of school on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

All MPS students will now have access to free breakfast and lunch at school. Over the summer, Milwaukee Public Schools was accepted into a program, open to schools that take part in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, that allows it to offer free lunch to all students enrolled in the district.

As if teaching all year long wasn't enough, Melissa Pallin -- who teachers lower elementary (1-3 grades) at Highland Community School and leads a summer learning program, too -- has taken an idea and made it reality in the matter of just a few months. In April, Pallin hit upon the idea of a space that would support her fellow teachers in a wide variety of ways. By July, her MKE Teacher SPAce was open on the second floor of the Plankinton Arcade in The Shops of Grand Avenue.

Last week, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker finally got off the fence and called for the state's lawmakers to "repeal Common Core and replace it with standards set by people in Wisconsin." Clearly an attempt to motivate his base, Walker's statement -- like most anti-Common Core sentiments -- missed the mark on what the real problems are and opened up an ugly can of worms.
