First steel cut for third Brazilian submarine

18 January 2015

Brazilian state-owned firm Nuclebrás Equipamentos Pesados (NUCLEP) has officially begun building the third of four Riachuelo-class (modified Scorpèn 2000) diesel-electric attack submarines, and cut the first steel for Tonelero (S 42) on 13 January in Itaguaí, State of Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil's Itaguaí Construções Navais (a joint venture of French DCNS and Brazilian Odebrecht Defesa e Tecnologia) is building five submarines for the Brazilian Navy comprising Riachuelo (S 40), Humaitá (S 41), Tonelero (S 42), and Angostura (S 43) conventional boats, as well a single nuclear-powered submarine (SNBR) Almirante Álvaro Alberto (SN 10). The submarines are expected to enter operational service in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2025, respectively.
