Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, during a 15 October speech, suggested the US Army increase its efforts in the Pacific by contributing more precision strike weapons and missile defence.
"With our ongoing rebalance to the Asia-Pacific, the army could broaden its role by leveraging its current suite of long-range precision-guided missiles, rockets, artillery, and air defence systems," Hagel told an audience at the annual Association of the United States Army (AUSA) conference.
"These capabilities would provide multiple benefits such as hardening the defences of US installations; enabling greater mobility of navy Aegis destroyers and other joint force assets; and helping ensure the free flow of commerce," he said "This concept is worthy of consideration going forward."
