Insecticides - A Cure Worse than the Ailment?
Neonicotinoids are insecticides that some consider a miracle weapon in our fields. But these neurotoxins don’t just kill pests they are also potentially harmful to humans, and this even in minute quantities. Our search into the use of neonicotinoids takes us to Japan. Researchers there say evidence already exists that the insecticides have had consequences on significant numbers of people. Even in Europe the relevant body, the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, has issued warnings about the effects of these toxins, especially on babies and young children. However, more and more neonicotinoids are being produced and used in vast quantities in Europe and the rest of the world. Manufacturers and lobbyists are working hard to prevent a total ban.
