Young Hollywood

Young Hollywood

Young Hollywood is Haylie's directorial debut. She will be the youngest female feature film director. The wrap party was on Haylie's 18th birthday, January 29th, 1998. Currently the movie is being edited in the post production process.

The movie is a look at young Hollywood celebrities today. It is a realistic drama, with aspects of a parody. For example, in one scene, there is a fight between two actors and one of them ends up spurting blood into a pool. But earlier in that scene a star-struck wannabe-actress gasps at seeing "Jonathan Taylor Timmins from House Improvement." (Ashley plays the wannabe, and she even came up with the line while filming the scene!)

Ashley also helped out by operating the "clapper"!

Haylie worked with a lot of friends on the movie. Roel Navarro is the writer and one of the stars. Tyrone Tann is the producer and lead actor. The other stars include: Ashley Johnson, Andrew Keegan (Party of Five), Casey Keegan, Brad Renfro (Sleepers, Apt Pupil), Jon and Jeremy Torgeson (Second Noah), Jenna Leigh Green (Sabrina the Teenage Witch), Heidi Lucas (Salute Your Shorts), Thomas Ian Nicholas, Corbin Allred (Teen Angel), David Lago, and Brock Pierce. Andrew Keegan plays hearthrob Jonny Furlough. In one scene he makes an appearance at a celebrity event for Multiple Sclerosis. I was an extra in this scene (and in the scene mentioned above). I played a fan, and got to "act" right next to Ashley! She doubled as an extra in some scenes.

Ashley's character Katrina is friends with Tyrone's character Zander, a hot TV star. Katrina wants to be an actress and is totally star struck. Zander writes a movie script, but fears becoming a sell-out.

That's Haylie, Ashley and Tyrone

Look for Jonny Lang in the movie too. At the wrap party he agreed to play some blues and have them film. Brad Renfro helped him out by singing a couple songs. The group Immature was at the party also, and they sang Happy Birthday to Haylie and Jonny.

The worst part about directing a movie for Haylie was "I am not a morning person and we had call times of 6am some of the days. But that was the only thing!" On the other hand, Haylie says, "Everyday on the set I had that feeling of- 'This is what I have dreamed of forever and I am actually doing it!' I felt so fortunate to be able to fulfill one of my biggest dreams so early. So all of it was exciting. But the best part about directing Young Hollywood is coming now that it is over with. Editing is the best because everything is coming together and we all can see the fruits of our labor."

Here's a quote from E online.... Do you have any upcoming movie roles? Andrew Keegan: I'm producing two films right now. One is called Young Hollywood, about young people in Hollywood. I have a cameo in the movie, too. Haylie Johnson is directing it. She was in Father's Day, and she'll be the youngest director ever. Right now, I'm working on a lot of stuff--but nothing I can talk about yet. Hopefully, a scary movie.
