About AFIM - Mission & Vision
AFIM Mission Statement
The Association for Independent Music is the professional trade organization dedicated to insuring the vitality of the independent music industry. AFIM provides business opportunities for its members through an annual convention, ongoing information services and educational resource materials. AFIM is also an advocacy group addressing the issues most relevant to the independent music industry.
AFIM Vision Statement / Goals
- Education: AFIM provides educational opportunities for newcomers to the indie music industry through the Crash Course panels which are held on the opening day of the annual AFIM Convention, and are audio taped and made available throughout the year to those unable to attend the course. Panels, workshops, and presentations hosted throughout the remainder of this annual convention (also audio taped) include informative discussions about commonly accepted business practices and procedures of the independent music industry and emerging technologies and trends. Another educational resource provided is the annually updated AFIM Directory which includes a membership listing with complete personnel and contact info, an Independent Distribution Guide and a Reference and Resource Guide. The AFIM publication, Indie Music World, also serves to educate by including informative articles which address issues of importance and current topics of interest to all segments of the independent music industry, as well as new release listings, top 10 indie charts and profiles of industry leaders.
- Networking: AFIM facilitates networking through the fostering of a mentoring program, and through SIG (Special Interest Groups) meetings at the annual convention and their continued cooperative activities throughout the year. The annually updated AFIM Directory is also provided to all member companies at no charge, and available for purchase by non-members for a minimal fee, in an effort to provide contact information for businesses in all aspects of independent music. The annual AFIM Convention provides an ideal forum for independent music industry representatives to meet and network, at both structured meetings and events, and at open and relaxed social activities.
- Increased visibility: AFIM's publication, Indie Music World, is sent to all AFIM members, in addition to hundreds of independent music industry retailers, press and media in an effort to increase the awareness and support of independent music in general, and AFIM members in particular. The AFIM website is open to viewing by virtually anyone, and includes information not only regarding AFIM, but also offering links to AFIM member sites, and to other indie music industry sites as well. AFIM also annually presents Indie Awards in recognition of recording excellence in over 40 categories of indie music genres (presented at the end of the annual AFIM Convention at the Indie Awards ceremonies), and publicizes these awards through press releases, website access, coverage in Indie Music World to members, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and to the general public through retail promotion programs.
