The horror of Sept. 11 will never fade.  Like newsreel footage from Pearl Harbor and the Zapruder film of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the television pictures of the World Trade Centers’ collapse, the Pentagon in flames and a smoldering crater in the Pennsylvania countryside will continue to shock for decade after decade.

The stories of more than 3,000 people who simply went to work Sept. 11 and were caught in the terrorists’ deadly attack will continue to break hearts for years to come. And the heroic actions of the tens of thousands of people who risked their lives in rescue and recovery efforts and the many more who reached out to help and heal will continue to inspire.

America’s union family was hit particularly hard by the attacks, with more than 600 union members killed. But America’s unions and union members responded incredibly quickly and with incredible charity that continues months later.

This special AFL-CIO web tribute is dedicated to the 631 union members who died in the Sept. 11 attacks.
