Application for Membership

In October 1990 the first "Gay and Lesbian Pride March" was held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Since then the event has gone through various changes and a consistent growth was experienced. Today the event is known as the "Johannesburg Gay Pride Festival" consisting of a fair day, an ‘umbrella’ festival, parade and party; and now forms a part of a larger organisation known as "Pride Heritage Movement" Commonly known as PRIDE®.

What one must realise is that PRIDE has become more than just an event/parade that is held once a year in September. PRIDE as an organisation is in operation every day of the year and "Pride events" take place throughout the year with the following goals in mind:

To contribute towards building a safe and supportive community spirit.
Creating opportunities for and within the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
To make a strong and positive statement on the existence and attributes of our community.
The creation of a platform for members of the LGBT community to celebrate their sexual orientation with pride. (Amongst these platforms the traditional Pride Parade)
To educate the LGBT community about their basic human rights, gender awareness and safer sexual practices.
A platform for the community to express their outrage about discrimination against the community.
To make the "Pride Parade" event accessible, safe, secure, hassle-free environment, well managed, well publicised and successful.
To ensure that individuals, groups and businesses from our community can play a part in every aspect of society.

WHAT WILL MEMBERSHIP OFFER YOU THE INDIVIDUAL?

As the introduction, the question must be answered with a question. How many of us belong to some club like the Edgars club or Virgin Active, etc.? Also a club where paid membership applies. Why then, would you not want membership to an organisation that’s aims at the protection and upliftment of you, a member of the LGBT community?

COST: For a mere R60.00 per month or a once-off payment of R720.00 per year. Membership is valid for one year.

BENEFITS:

A newsletter (Initially quarterly) to inform you of events, burning issues and also opportunities – employment and otherwise – within the community.
Greatly discounted access to PRIDE events and also Pride events hosted by our various partners. (Bars, clubs, restaurants, theatres, retail outlets etc.)
Access to our info-line; your one stop gayte to all you need to know about the gay community and what it is doing.
Additional benefits to be added regularly (These will include: insurance and medical-aids negotiated at special terms and rates for our members)
Special rates from Pride’s gay Internet Service Provider (ISP). The gay ISP focusing specifically at providing services of interest to the gay market.
Pride Communications cc commits itself to full support and protection of the rights of its members. (Whether this support comes in the form of advice, legal assistance or the utilisation of our infrastructure to mobilise the community, at our director’s discretion.)

PRIDE PRINCIPLES

Non discrimination

PRIDE must not unfairly discriminate in terms of membership, or treatment on the basis of race, colour, religion, culture, gender, national origin, age, sexual and gender orientation, financial standing, handicapping (disabilities) and health conditions

Access

PRIDE shall strive to ensure equal access to all events and functions to all members of the LGBT community by creating policies to ensure access.

Inclusivity and representivity

PRIDE shall strive to ensure that its member and all Pride events are representative and inclusive of the entire LGBT community.
