Get all of the Oscars® It's amazing what an ego or two (not to mention the mere mention of said ego's parents and spouses, of whom they "couldn't have done it without") can do to a live television broadcast. So despite all the Tinseltown talk about how this year's ceremony just won't pack the usually anticipated punch, wise men and women will still pad the recording by at least one and a half hours. Here's how to do it:
  • Go to Search by Title and type in "77" (to find "77th Annual Academy Awards", then press SELECT
  • With the highlight on "Record this episode", press RIGHT to highlight "Options", then press SELECT
  • Change "Stop Recording" to "1 and 1/2 hour longer," then press SELECT twice

Weather or Not
Subscribers like Michael M. and Mitch S. say you'll warm to this TiVo tip immediately, especially if you live in a region where weather dictates whether or not you can even leave the house. "When the weather is bad, TiVo guarantees I don't miss the list of affected schools," explains Michael.
Here's how he does it:
  • From "Pick Programs to Record," select "Record by Time or Channel," then "Manually Record Time/Channel."
  • Locate the Weather Channel or choose a station that airs your favorite morning show and select "Repeating," and "Every Mon-Fri."
  • "To save disk space, I set it to record only 5 minutes (the minimum) at the lowest quality," explains Mitch. (Once the TiVo box is tuned to the desired channel, Mitch uses the standard cache to fast-forward or rewind as necessary.)
  • Finally, Mitch opts to set 'Keep at Most' to 1 so that the most recent broadcast always automatically bumps the old.

Priorities? Anyone, Anyone?
Remember: Your scheduled recordings are prioritized in the order they are set up, the first having highest priority and so on. To ensure you never miss a show you expect to be recorded, regularly review this list using "Season Pass Manager" (under "Pick Programs to Record"). For example, let's say you created a WishList keyword search for "PRESIDENTS" with the auto-record option, and a Season PassTM recording for "Friends." If a History Channel documentary on Abraham Lincoln airs the same time as "Friends," the TiVo service will check the priorities in Season Pass Manager to decide which program to record. If the WishList keyword "PRESIDENTS" is higher on your list than "Friends," the History Channel documentary will be recorded and "Friends" will not. Once in Season Pass Manager, you can easily change the order of the list by using the arrow buttons on your remote.

Spoiler: Game on!
If you're using a WishList(TM) search to catch every football game this season, chances are you don't even break a pretzel in honor of the game until well past the kickoff hour. That being the case, here's a tip one tried-and-true TiVo fan can lob to another: Press the TiVo button on your remote BEFORE you power on the TV. That way, your monitor will display TiVo Central instead of live television, preventing an unwanted peek at the real-time score before you can play the game from the beginning. (Bonus Tip: Always use Overtime Scheduler to protect yourself against missing even one nail-biting completion! As you schedule recordings, select "Options" and highlight the line labeled "Stop Recording" to adjust the default times. And for the record, we at TiVo Inc., recommend at LEAST an hour padding, both for sporting events and Hollywood award shows.)

Got Kids?
Subscriber Michael Row wrote in to share a TiVo tip with fellow parents: For children’s programming that airs daily, schedule a Season Pass(TM) recording, and select the “Options” menu item. Next, highlight the "Keep at Most" line item, and set the maximum number of episodes to save per series to 1. (The default is five episodes.) "That way, you’ll always have a cache of shows to use to calm the troupe down when they get crazy," says Michael. "But you won't clog up your drive for more than 2 1/2 hours (depending on how many shows you pick) with kid-centric viewing."

Going on a summer vacation?
If you're planning to be away from your TiVo box for an extended period of time, review your To Do List (TiVo Central > Pick Programs To Record > To Do List) to ensure that all your favorite shows will be ready-and-waiting upon your return. Delete any shows you can live without so you don't inadvertently bump a must-see documentary with the daily news or a show that airs several times a week. (Hint: to jump instantly to the To Do List, press the TiVo button followed by the number 2. 'Tis easy enough to remember: Just think 2 for "To Do"!)

Watch One Show, Record Another
If you have the DIRECTV DVR with TiVo service, you probably already know you can record two shows at the same time. But did you know that if you have a TiVo Series2 DVR and a cable or antenna signal, you can rig your TiVo to record one show as you watch another? To do this, you must have a TV with jacks for both Composite Video In and RF In--most TVs have both. We've got the step-by-step instructions for you right here. The only new equipment you'll need is an RF splitter. You can purchase an RF splitter at your local electronics store (it'll probably cost less than $10).

WishList Keywords
When creating a WishList keyword using the onscreen keypad, you can use the FORWARD button to enter a space into your search and the BACK (Rewind) button to quickly delete characters. Use spaces for hyphens (-), slashes (/) and periods (.). Also, any other marks, like apostrophes (') and ampersands (&), should be ignored. For example, if you're looking for documentaries and specials on the all-female band The Go-Go's, use the WishList keyword "GO[FORWARD button]GOS.".

Make a Holiday WishList
TiVo subscribers understand the WishList feature is a gift that keeps on giving TV season after TV season. Press the TiVo button followed by the number 3 to instantly arrive at the "Create WishList" screen anytime. And be creative! Try entering "CRAFTS" as a keyword and select "Arts & Living" for endless ideas on hand-made gifts. Or type in "GINGERBREAD" and TiVo will catch the relevant shows as fast as it can!
