The Gay and Lesbian Archives (GALA) of South Africa are engaged in a research project on the experience of gays in the apartheid military in the mid-seventies to mid-1980s.
GALA would like to hear from gay conscripts or members of the Permanent Force who served at that time.
What was you experience of the military?
Did being in an all male environment allow for free exploration of gay sexuality and for sexual encounters?
Did you experience discrimination?
What were the attitudes and reactions of fellow national servicemen?
What was the attitude to homosexuality of the authorities at that time?
Do you know of people who were assigned to the military psychiatrists or to Ward 22 at 1 Military hospital at Voortrekkerhoogte because of their homosexuality.
GALA would like to hear from you, whatever your experience.
All information will be treated confidentially.
