I am an African speech by Thabo Mbeki (8 May 1996)
I am an African. I am born of the peoples of the continent of Africa. The pain of the violent conflict that the peoples of Liberia, Somalia, the Sudan, Burundi and Algeria is a pain I also bear. The dismal shame of poverty, suffering and human degradation of my continent is a blight that we share. The blight on our happiness that derives from this and from our drift to the periphery of the ordering of human affairs leaves us in a persistent shadow of despair.

October 4, 2004: A British man has been jailed for having sex with two men in Morocco - where homosexuality is illegal.

Kenneth Watson, 66, was caught having sex with an 18-year-old Moroccan man and a 16-year-old boy, the British Embassy in Rabat said.

Homosexuality is banned in the north African kingdom but it is a popular destination for sex tourists.

The 18-year-old was also jailed for a year. Watson is appealing against his sentence, an embassy spokesman said.

The 16-year-old was released because he was a minor, he added.

The Associated Press news agency reported that Watson was also ordered to pay a fine of 500 dirham, about 31, on the misdemeanor charge.

The maximum jail sentence was three years.
