MONTREAL – July 31, 2006: About 1500 participants in the World Conference on LGBT Human Rights in Montreal stated in its final declaration on Saturday that 'LGBT individuals and groups in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe no longer accept prejudice and discrimination, and are becoming increasingly impatient to achieve freedom and equality.

As a part of the United Nations, there are 53 members of ECOSOC (the UN Economic and Social Council.) Nineteen of these members are charged with giving NGOs consultative status (ECOSOC status) at the UN. This gives NGOs access to, amongst other things, the Commission of Human Rights (CHR). Currently over 2700 NGOs enjoy this status; and while not able to endorse their own agendas, it does enable them to participate fully in global debates at the UN and to circulate statements of a certain length.
