Dialogue on nanoparticles

Nanotechnology is seen as a key 21st century technology. Industry and science regard its market potential as substantial. Recent surveys have pinpointed a host of areas in which nanotechnology can be applied, indicating possible health risks and highlighting the need for research. With nanoproducts already available on the market, the issue of synthetic nanoparticles has come more to the fore. This has raised many questions about the opportunities and applications involved as well as potential risks to health and the environment.

The Federal Environment Ministry (BMU), the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) and the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) have therefore launched a project entitled Identification and evaluation of the environmental and health hazards posed by nanoparticles. Its purpose is to initiate a dialogue with other stakeholders to debate the impact of synthetic nanoparticles on health and the environment
