Transsexualism & The Process of Gender Reassignment

Transsexualism is a rare condition with approximately 5,000 people experiencing it in the UK. It has no related mental illnesses. Transsexuals remain fit to work throughout their treatment (with the necessary absences for the treatment itself) and their abilities are in no way affected by the condition or its treatment.

Transsexualism can be understood and treated as an intersex condition of the brain. This means that at birth, an inevitable mistake is made about the sex of the child, and the treatment in later life is required so that they can live in their correct sex.

Transsexualism is separate and different from transvetism. It should not be confused with sexuality; like everyone else, transsexuals may identify as straight or gay according to their sexual preference.
