ABOUT US

Boxofficeindia.com is the premium boxoffice site for hindi films. The site is by far the largest box office site in India and the second largest box office site in the world in terms of reach and viewership. After years of hard work, Boxofficeindia.com has been able to get a team of reporters and representives to give the most up to date and authentic news related to the business side of hindi films.

SOURCES

All data prior to 1954 is estimated depending on the how long a film ran as actual collections were not published. After that the data has been estimated from what has been given in trade journals. Many figures from 2004 onwards are what the distributor or producers have declared.

As corporates are entering the industry, box office figures have become much more transparent and most corporates issue collections of their films. When collections are not issued for films, the network of Boxofficeindia.com is today big enough and is able to get collections from most centres around India through our various representives.

VERDICTS

All verdicts are based on the distributor returns against the cost of the film. If verdicts are the same then the advantage is given to the film with a larger distributor share.

The site will not be putting up adjusted grosses of every film as the purpose of the site is not to compare films or stars in terms of business of bygone era's with today's films or stars. But for those interested in adjusting the grosses the chart above can be used in the following way.

How To Use The Chart

First the admissions must be worked and these are done by dividing Nett Gross by year of release ticket price.

Taking Veer Zaara(2004) as example its admissions would be 41,00,00,000(nett Gross)/47(2004 average ticket price) which is equal to 87,23,404 approx.

That gives us 87,23,404 admissions

Now to find out what business Veer Zaara would have done in another year is times the admissions by the ticket price of that year.

So for 1960 it would be 87,23,404 times 2.15(1960 average ticket price) making it 1,87,55,319 nett gross for 1960.

Similarly for 1990 it would be 87,23,404 times 11.35(1990 average ticket price) making it 9,90,10,635 nett gross for 1990.

TERRITORIES

The box office for hindi films is split into many sectors which the trade calls circuits or territories. The main territories are:

Mumbai territory is formed by Mumbai City, Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Delhi/UP territory is formed by Delhi City and the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttranchal Pradesh

East Punjab territory is formed by the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir.

West Bengal territory is formed by the state of West Bengal including Kolkata City.

Bihar territory is formed by the states of Bihar and Jharkhand and parts of Chattisgarh.

CP Berar territory is formed by parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.

CI Territory is formed by parts of Madhya Pradesh.

Rajasthan territory is formed by the state of Rajasthan.

Nizam territory is formed by Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh

Mysore territory is formed by most of Karnataka including Bangalore.

There are also some other very small territories like Assam, Orrisa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra

DISTRIBUTOR SHARES

The distributor shares are the bottom line. A films verdict is formed depending on the distributor shares. The distributor shares are nett gross minus theatre rentals. The theatre rentals vary. A good quality theatre will charge much more than a rundown theatre. This is where sometimes the nett grosses do not tell the whole story. A classic example is the Rajmandir Cinema in Jaipur. This theatre charges rent at Rs 20,000 per show and a successful film may generate business of around 50 lakhs in 6 weeks at the theatre but the distributor share will only be around 17 lakhs whereas the close by Golcha theatre in Jaipur will give a 17 lakh share on just 28 lakhs business. Bihar has the cheapest rentals while Delhi city is most expensive.

NETT GROSS AND GROSS

The amount collected at the ticket window is taxed in India. This tax is called entertainment tax. These taxes vary from state to state. Nett gross figures are always after this tax has been deducted while gross figures are before this tax has been deducted.
