Helen wins National Championships in Swift 1-2

Sunday 6th January 2008 was the Elite National cyclo-cross championships across Europe and in the UK, Swift Racing had World Number 5 Helen Wyman lining up with team-mate Gabby Day for the UK Title.

On a very well prepared Sutton Coldfield course, resembling many in mainland Europe, the race had 22 starters. Getting away fastest was Gabby Day, who exited the road section first ahead of team-mate Wyman. Not happy in 2nd place, Helen moved quickly past Gabby and the Swift Racing pair headed clear of the rest of the field.

On Lap 2, Helen had a small technical problem, costing her the lead of the race, however after a swift change of bike Helen started to pursue Gabby. On lap 3, Helen launched what was to prove to be a definitive move on the road section. Over the final 2½ laps, Helen steadily moved away from Gabby to secure her 3rd title in a row.

Speaking after the race, Helen said, ‘ this win is as good as the first. I don’t think any pro ever gets tired of winning. In my new team colours, there is never a better way to start the year. It was also the hardest to win as I knew just how good Gabby has been in Europe this year. Anyone who can get in the top 10 of a World Cup (Gabby was 9th in Pijnacker this season) is always going to be a threat.’

Tinsley, riding in the A class took on the tough Darley Moor course against a strong field for the Onimpex Bioracer RT in superb weather but with the customary heavy headwind on the first half of the circuit.

Second place for Tinsley was a superb achievement for a man new to the LVRC and another podium place for his new bike supplier Museeuw.

“Darley Moor is always tough,” commented Tinsley “and I’m amazed at the strength and quality of the opposition. I’m very happy with the result.”

A day later and arguably Tinsley did even better, taking bronze in the North West Regional Championships against a very strong field of riders, many half his age.

Riding hard to bridge a gap of 1’25” from the bunch to a super strong Mark Lovatt, Tinsley was piped in the final sprint by both Lovatt and young Pete Williams (Kinesis).

Onimpex Bioracer RT notched up 2 further silver medals in a superb weekend for the team with Steve Davis taking second place aboard his Museeuw in the LVRC Crit Championships B class and super tough rider Steve Jolley repeating the feat in class C

“It’s been a hell of a weekend for us!” said team boss Ken Jones “The boys have ridden fabulously and the new Museeuw bikes have proved not only comfortable but clearly pretty fast too!”
