Introduction to Long Zang Buddhist Canon

Until Tang dynasty (9th century), Buddhist scriptures were still copied by hand-writing. As the xylography of Buddhist scriptures began at Song dynasty (971), making of Buddhist canon started at the same time.

What is ¡§Long Zang"?

'Long Zang' means the making of Buddhist canon by the emperor. Every dynasty had made bigger collection since Song dynasty

The making of Long Zang Buddhist Canon
The beginning of every ten booklet of Long Zang, there were a picture of Buddha giveing a lesson to his disciples and a mark of emperor.

The Buddhist canon in Po Lin Monastery belong to the last sets ever made in 1735 during the early Qing Dynasty.Emperor Yongzheng invited 126 civil officials, scholars and monks to edit and supervise. It took four years to complete production of the crafted scripts. 103 sets of the Long Zang were printed. Each set consisted of 7,240 booklets. As time pass by and instability of the society, some scriptures were destroyed and only a few sets remain. The Po Lin Monastery is honoured to have had 7,173 booklets of one set of the Long Zang as a gift from the Buddhist Association of China since1982.
